1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a gaming replay you want to loop on YouTube Live, FFmpeg is usually the more practical choice for a repeatable, unattended setup. It gives you explicit control over the loop, encoding and stream destination, and can be run from a script. VLC may suit a manual, graphical workflow, but verify the complete repeat-and-stream process with your VLC version before relying on it: a current official end-to-end guide was not available. Neither option has a guaranteed uptime advantage; both depend on a compatible outgoing feed, a stable connection and monitoring.
This is a workflow comparison, not a performance test. Below are an FFmpeg example pattern, the YouTube settings that matter, what to check with VLC, and an alternative if you do not want a computer or VPS running at home.
What the two tools need to do
A replay file must be encoded and sent to YouTube as a live feed. Repeating an ordinary YouTube upload does not turn it into a continuous live broadcast. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and a private stream key; see YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
| Decision point | FFmpeg | VLC |
|---|---|---|
| Typical workflow | Command line; suitable for repeatable scripts and process supervision. | Graphical media player; may feel more approachable for manual playback and repeat controls. |
| Control of outgoing feed | Strong fit when you need to specify encoding, bitrate, keyframes, output format and destination. Confirm available options in your installed build. | Consider it if its GUI-based playback and output meet YouTube’s ingest requirements; verify the version and complete streaming chain first. |
| Looping a finished file | FFmpeg documents input-loop support. Option placement matters. | Confirm the selected version’s playlist/repeat behavior when streaming. Do not assume a local repeat control by itself creates a working YouTube live feed. |
| Unattended operation | Can be scripted and supervised with logs and restart handling, but scripting does not guarantee uptime. | A GUI can be easier to inspect manually; unattended running and recovery should be tested in advance. |
These are practical workflow distinctions, not benchmark results. No FFmpeg or VLC stream was tested for this comparison.

Set YouTube’s ingest expectations first
YouTube Help’s encoder guidance, accessed October 4, 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Check the current encoder settings before configuring an encoder because platform guidance can change.
H.264 bitrate examples
The following are YouTube’s H.264 recommended incoming bitrates in its guidance accessed October 4, 2026. They are ingest recommendations, not a promise of a particular picture quality or connection stability.
| Incoming video | YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
YouTube provides separate recommended ranges for H.265 and AV1. Match the recommendation to the codec, resolution and frame rate you actually send rather than applying the H.264 figures to another codec.

Check upload headroom and test
YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Measure outbound capacity, not just download speed, and leave room for normal variation and other network traffic. Test with comparable movement and audio before a public broadcast, then watch stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

FFmpeg is the stronger fit when you want the loop and outgoing stream settings to be explicit. Its command-line documentation distinguishes input options from output options: put input-specific flags before the relevant -i, and output settings after the input. Check the syntax and supported codecs against your installed build in the FFmpeg documentation.
The following is an example pattern, not a tested command. Substitute the actual server URL and key locally, select an encoder and settings supported by your build, and confirm they match YouTube’s current guidance. Do not publish or share a command containing your real stream key.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "replay.mp4" -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M -r 60 -g 120 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv "rtmps://SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEY"
This illustrates real-time pacing (-re), indefinite input looping (-stream_loop -1), an H.264 output pattern, a two-second GOP/keyframe interval at 60 fps (-g 120), audio encoding, and an RTMPS-style destination. It is not a universal preset: for example, the 8 Mbps video bitrate shown corresponds to YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for 720p60, not 1080p60. Choose the bitrate, frame rate, resolution, audio settings and encoder to fit your source, connection and YouTube’s applicable recommendations. The destination syntax and available output muxers can vary with the build; validate them locally.
- Inspect the replay. Confirm its resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, duration and audio track. Decide whether to preserve its look or encode to a supported, predictable output.
- Choose the loop behavior. For a single file, use the input-loop option before its
-ias shown in the pattern. Check the installed FFmpeg documentation if the option is unavailable or behaves differently in your build. - Set output encoding. Choose a YouTube-supported protocol and codec, CBR target appropriate to the resolution and frame rate, and a keyframe interval no longer than four seconds; YouTube recommends two seconds. Ensure audio is present and encoded compatibly.
- Insert the destination privately. In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and key through the encoder workflow. Keep the key secret; YouTube describes stream keys as a stream’s “password and address.” If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s stream settings.
- Run a test before going public. Start with a private or unlisted test where appropriate, inspect YouTube’s stream health and confirm the replay loops with audio and stable motion. Correct any warnings before switching to a public broadcast.
- Plan supervision. A script, service manager or process supervisor can help log failures and restart FFmpeg, but it cannot fix an unstable connection or guarantee the YouTube ingest remains live. Decide who or what will notice and respond to interruptions.
Looping several replay clips
For a playlist of separate files, do not assume stream-copy concatenation will work merely because each clip plays on its own. It is sensitive to mismatched codecs, resolution, frame rate and stream layout. Normalize the clips to compatible properties or re-encode where needed, then test transitions and audio between clips before a long broadcast.
What to verify before using VLC
VLC may be more comfortable if you prefer selecting media and controlling playback in a graphical interface. The key question is not just whether VLC repeats a file locally, but whether your particular version can send that repeating playback to YouTube in an ingest-compatible format and remain stable for the intended duration.

- Check the VLC version’s documentation for playlist/repeat behavior and streaming output.
- Confirm the output protocol, codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval and audio format against YouTube’s current encoder recommendations.
- Run a full test with the same replay and network conditions you plan to use, and inspect YouTube’s stream health.
- Verify what happens if playback ends, the network drops or YouTube disconnects the feed; do not assume automatic recovery.
No current official VLC guide documenting the entire repeat-to-YouTube-Live path was located, so specific VLC menu paths or a claim that VLC cannot do it would be unwarranted. Use the documentation for your installed version and validate the whole chain before relying on it unattended.

Having a replay file does not automatically grant permission to broadcast every element in it. Game footage, publisher terms, licensed music and other included audio can raise separate rights questions; the answer depends on the game and the material in the recording. Review the applicable rights and platform requirements before streaming. No universal rights conclusion applies to every game or soundtrack.
Also plan around YouTube’s archive behavior: its encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a longer continuous stream will be fully archived. See YouTube’s encoder setup information.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a signal | Stream URL/key, destination syntax, protocol or key privacy | Recheck the encoder details in Live Control Room, confirm the output destination for your FFmpeg/VLC build, and reset the key if it may have been exposed. |
| Stream health warns of instability | Insufficient or variable upload capacity, competing traffic, or a bitrate beyond the connection’s reliable capacity | Measure upload capacity, reduce the target if necessary, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and retest. |
| Video is choppy or has long delivery delay | Encoding load, mismatched output settings or network constraints | Check encoder load and output settings; test an appropriate resolution/frame rate and confirm the chosen bitrate against YouTube’s guidance. |
| Loop does not repeat as expected | Loop option placement or media-player playlist behavior | For FFmpeg, place input loop options before the corresponding -i; for VLC, verify repeat behavior for the installed version and test the entire stream output. |
| Combined playlist breaks at a clip boundary | Different codecs, frame rates, resolutions or stream layouts | Normalize or re-encode the clips to compatible properties and test the transitions before broadcast. |
| Broadcast stops after a disconnect | No recovery supervision or a persistent ingest/network problem | Check logs and Live Control Room, restore the feed, and consider process supervision for a DIY setup. A restart mechanism does not remove the need to identify the underlying fault. |
