Choose Wordle if you like narrowing one hidden five-letter answer with clear letter-by-letter clues. Choose Connections if you prefer spotting several relationships across a board of words, including plausible decoys and wordplay. Neither is universally harder: they test different kinds of thinking, and both daily puzzles are listed as available without a New York Times Games subscription.

Each Wordle guess gives information about the letters and their positions in a single answer. You can use that feedback to rule out options and shape the next guess. The challenge is managing uncertainty within six attempts.
Connections asks you to choose among plausible patterns
Connections presents several possible relationships at once. A set may seem to fit a theme, yet one or more words may belong to a different intended group. TechRadar notes that categories can involve wordplay or homophones, which can disguise the connection. Its guide reports a four-mistake limit.

Which game should you choose?
- Pick Wordle if you enjoy a focused puzzle where every guess supplies clear clues about one answer.
- Pick Connections if you enjoy scanning a whole board, comparing competing groupings, and looking for less literal links.
- Try both if you want two distinct daily word-game formats; the NYT Games Help Center lists both among the daily games available without a Games subscription.
There is no verified universal difficulty winner. The mechanics support different strengths: vocabulary and association can matter in Connections, while Wordle puts pressure on making useful guesses within a fixed attempt limit. The cited coverage describes gameplay, not a controlled comparison of solve rates or difficulty.
Do you need a subscription?
No Games subscription is required for the daily versions of Wordle and Connections, according to the NYT Games subscription help page. A subscription is relevant if you want access to the broader Games collection and companion features such as Wordle Bot. The help page also says that signing in to an NYT account makes progress, statistics, and streaks available across devices; without signing in, progress is stored locally and may be lost when changing devices. Check the official page for current access terms and pricing, which may change.

What about subscriber bonus puzzles?
In a September 2, 2026 announcement, The New York Times Company said it was introducing weekly drops of five to six bonus puzzles, including Wordle in 1 and Connections 3×3, for Games and All Access subscribers. The announcement described the puzzles as beginning to roll out, so treat their availability and schedule as time-sensitive rather than as a requirement for playing either daily game.
