These settings help you manage your connection and storage; none guarantees a faster download.
1. Check Steam’s download speed limit
Open Steam > Settings > Downloads and inspect Limit Download Speed. If it is enabled with a low cap, raise it or turn it off when you want Steam to use more of your available connection. Keep a limit if other people or devices need bandwidth while the game downloads. Steam describes the setting as a way to limit Steam’s bandwidth or address connection problems. Check the units before choosing a value: Steam may display rates in kilobytes or megabytes per second, while internet plans are commonly advertised in bits per second. MB/s and Mbps are not interchangeable units.
2. Put the game ahead of queued downloads
Open the Downloads manager and review what is already waiting. If updates or other downloads are ahead of the game, use the queue controls to move the game up. Steam’s download manager lets you view progress and reorder queued work. Steam Support’s download and update guidance covers queue management.

3. Keep automatic updates from competing at the wrong time
Steam lets you set a daily window for automatic game updates and choose update behavior for individual games, including Update only when I launch it. These options can help avoid automatic updates during a large download. They do not stop every possible download: the schedule applies to automatic updates, not downloads you start manually, and launching a game with an update pending can trigger that update. Use the same Downloads settings and each game’s update preferences to manage timing.
4. Choose a library with enough free space
Bandwidth settings affect network use; library settings affect where Steam installs the game. Before you begin, check the game’s Steam store listing for its storage requirement and compare that with the free space on the intended drive. Steam supports library folders on multiple drives, so you can select a suitable folder when installing a game or move an existing installation without downloading it again. Steam Support says external hard drives are not recommended for Steam or Steam games because they can cause performance issues or unexpected disconnections. If an external drive is causing problems, Steam advises using an internal drive instead. Steam Support’s guidance on game library locations explains the recommendation. Check the game’s listed requirement and your drive’s actual free space rather than assuming a particular drive capacity is necessary.
5. Decide whether downloads should continue while you play
Steam pauses downloads when you launch a game by default, prioritizing the game’s network activity. To let downloads continue, open Steam > Settings > Downloads and enable Allow Downloads During Gameplay. A download may compete with online play, so Steam suggests setting a bandwidth limit if gameplay network performance suffers. Steam Support explains the gameplay download setting.

6. Save download-cache clearing for troubleshooting
Clear Download Cache is not a routine speed boost. Steam recommends it for cases where a game will not download or start. Clearing the cache does not affect installed games, but it requires you to sign in to Steam again. Use it when troubleshooting those problems, not as a standard step before every large download. Steam’s download guidance includes the cache option.

There is no single best speed limit for every connection, and these controls cannot guarantee a measurable speed increase. Choose settings according to whether your main constraint is shared bandwidth, competing downloads, or available storage.
