Recommended starting settings
- Flight mode: Standard for direct left-stick steering; Expert for roll-and-pitch control.
- Difficulty: Pilot for the publisher’s balanced starting challenge; Rookie if you want extra protection from collisions with the ground or structures.
- Input device: Use a controller you already have if the game recognizes it. For HOTAS, verify support for your exact model and platform rather than relying on a generic mapping recipe.
These are starting points, not claims that one control mode or device is objectively best. The right choice depends on whether you prefer familiar steering or more direct aircraft-orientation control.
What is the difference between Standard and Expert controls?
Standard: steer with horizontal stick input
In Standard mode, pushing the left stick left or right turns the aircraft. It is the natural place to begin if you want a more familiar steering scheme without first coordinating roll and pitch.
Expert: roll, then pitch to turn
In Expert mode, the left stick rolls the aircraft left or right, and you then pitch up or down to turn. Bandai Namco Europe says this mode enables a wider range of aerial maneuvers and more precise aircraft control. Try it if you want to manage the aircraft’s orientation more directly; the added control method may feel less familiar at first.

You can treat Standard and Expert as different steering approaches rather than as a simple easy-versus-hard ranking. Begin with the one that feels intuitive, then switch if you want to explore the other method.
What difficulty should you start on?
Pilot: balanced starting challenge
Bandai Namco describes Pilot as the recommended choice for players who are new to flying games or returning after a break, and as the default balanced challenge.

Rookie: extra collision assistance
Choose Rookie if your priority is following the story with less pressure. The publisher says it includes settings that reduce damage from collisions with the ground or structures.
Veteran and Elite
Veteran and Elite are the other listed difficulty choices. The official guidance cited here does not describe their specific tuning, so choose them based on your preferred challenge rather than assuming particular damage or assist values.

Difficulty can be changed at any time, according to the publisher, so you can adjust after seeing how the opening missions feel.
Does a controller work on PC?
A TechRadar reviewer reported using an Xbox Wireless Controller successfully throughout a PC review. That is a useful example of a conventional controller working on PC, but it does not establish compatibility for every controller, setup, or platform. If you already own a controller, check whether the game detects it before buying another input device.

Ace Combat 8 is listed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. The available platform information does not provide a complete compatibility matrix for every controller model.

The available official control guide explains Standard and Expert flight modes but does not list HOTAS devices, model-specific compatibility, button mappings, or sensitivity settings. A PC Gamer launch-period report described complaints about a lack of HOTAS support; that is evidence of a reported issue at launch, not a definitive statement about current support for every device.

Before buying or configuring a HOTAS, check current information for your exact stick, platform, and game version. Do not assume that every axis can be remapped or that a particular model will work. The sources available here do not establish a verified device list or a recommended HOTAS mapping.
