FSR is AMD’s upscaling technology, with Sony describing its updated PSSR as related to FSR 4 through Sony and AMD’s collaboration—not as the same technology. Which looks best depends on the game and its implementation. The available evidence does not establish a universal winner or a matched performance comparison.
What QSSR, PSSR and FSR mean on PlayStation
Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) is Sony’s newly announced AI upscaling tier for the base PlayStation 5. Sony describes it as a streamlined, performance-oriented evolution of its PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology, designed around the base console’s performance constraints. The announcement identifies a streamlined neural-network architecture and hand-tuned implementation, but does not publish a full technical specification or detailed performance figures. Sony’s QSSR announcement
PSSR is Sony’s AI upscaling technology for PS5 Pro. Sony says it analyzes game images pixel by pixel and has been used to boost effective resolution in more than 50 PS5 Pro titles. Sony calls PSSR the “gold standard” on PS5 Pro; that is Sony’s characterization, not an independent comparative ranking. Sony’s PSSR overview
FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) is AMD’s upscaling technology, implemented by game developers for supported hardware and games. Sony says its updated PSSR algorithm and neural network stem from Project Amethyst, its AI graphics collaboration with AMD, and points to FSR 4 as a PC expression of that collaboration. This establishes a relationship between the efforts, not that QSSR, PSSR and every FSR version are identical or interchangeable. Sony’s corporate presentation

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How the technologies compare
| Technology | Where it applies | What the available evidence says | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|---|
| QSSR | Base PS5; enabled as a game-specific graphics option | Sony says it uses a streamlined neural network and hand-tuned implementation for PS5 performance constraints, with an emphasis on detail and image stability. Sony’s QSSR announcement | It is not shown to be available in every PS5 game, nor does Sony publish matched resolution or frame-rate figures for the announced titles. |
| PSSR | PS5 Pro | Sony describes an AI library that analyzes images pixel by pixel and says it has been used in more than 50 PS5 Pro titles. A Sony corporate presentation calls an updated version “PSSR 2.0.” Sony’s PSSR overview; Sony’s corporate presentation | The title count is an adoption figure, not a quality score or a count of QSSR games. |
| FSR | Game- and platform-specific implementations, including PC | Sony connects FSR 4 and updated PSSR to its collaboration with AMD. IO Interactive, for example, says 007 First Light uses upgraded PSSR by default on PS5 Pro and FSR 3.1.5 on other platforms. IO Interactive on 007 First Light | The example does not compare the technologies under identical hardware, settings or conditions; FSR support and version depend on the game. |
Upscaling reconstructs a higher-resolution output from an image rendered at a lower resolution. It can help a game balance image clarity and performance, but the existence of upscaling alone does not establish a particular frame-rate gain. That depends on the game, its settings and its implementation. Sony says QSSR is tuned for base-PS5 constraints, but has not provided figures that quantify the trade-off.
Image detail and stability depend on the game
Sony and its developer partners emphasize fine detail—such as foliage, hair, fabric and particles—and temporal stability: how well detail holds together as the camera or objects move, rather than shimmering or flickering. These are qualitative descriptions, not results from one shared benchmark.

Ubisoft’s account of Assassin’s Creed Shadows describes upgraded PSSR in Performance, Balanced and Quality modes, including improvements to moving vegetation, particles, transparency and noisy ray-traced effects. Those observations describe one game’s implementation; they do not predict the result in every title. Ubisoft’s technical article on Assassin’s Creed Shadows
What the first QSSR games show
Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games patched to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option. Insomniac’s Mike Fitzgerald describes greater pixel-level clarity and stability in Wolverine. Sucker Punch’s Jasmin Patry says QSSR resolves fine detail in Ghost of Yōtei’s characters and environments with temporal stability not previously possible on PS5. These are developers’ descriptions of their own games, not independent lab measurements. Sony’s QSSR announcement

Independent hands-on coverage reported particularly strong visible gains in Wolverine and less dramatic gains in Ghost of Yōtei. With only two games discussed, that evidence supports a title-dependent reading—not a claim that QSSR always improves one kind of scene, or that it beats PSSR or FSR overall. Independent hands-on comparison
What to check before comparing a game
- Confirm the platform and patch. QSSR is for supported base-PS5 games; PSSR is the PS5 Pro tier. Sony says QSSR will be offered broadly to PlayStation developers, but has not published a complete game list or rollout schedule. Sony’s QSSR announcement
- Check the game’s graphics options. QSSR is an additional option in the announced titles, not an automatic system-wide setting. For PSSR, note which mode the game uses; Ubisoft’s Shadows account, for instance, discusses Performance, Balanced and Quality modes.
- Compare the same scene and settings. Fine detail and moving elements can reveal different strengths than a still image. Record the game mode and platform rather than treating screenshots from different conditions as a controlled comparison.
- Separate image quality from speed. A sharper image does not by itself prove a higher frame rate, and a frame-rate target does not reveal the input resolution. Sony’s corporate presentation describes updated PS5 Pro PSSR as using machine learning to enhance clarity and deliver 4K visuals at high frame rates, but that formulation is not a matched benchmark against QSSR or FSR. Sony’s corporate presentation
Is QSSR better than FSR or PSSR?
There is not enough comparable evidence to declare one technology best overall. QSSR targets base-PS5 constraints, PSSR is Sony’s PS5 Pro tier, and FSR is implemented across supported games and platforms. The available sources do not provide a controlled, matched comparison of QSSR, PSSR and FSR across games for input and output resolution, frame rate, latency and image quality. For a practical choice, check whether the specific game and patch support the feature, then compare its graphics options on the hardware you use.
