Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) is Sony’s AI-upscaling technology for the standard PS5. Sony describes it as an evolution of the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology used on PS5 Pro, redesigned with a simpler neural-network architecture and a manually optimized implementation to fit standard PS5 performance constraints. The first announced games are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, where QSSR appears as an added graphics option after a game update.
How AI upscaling works on PS5
Sony describes PSSR as analyzing game images pixel by pixel and using AI to upscale them with more detail and stability than conventional approaches. QSSR applies that general idea to the standard PS5: it uses information from a game’s rendered image to produce a higher-clarity output, while the game and console still have to stay within a real-time rendering budget. Sony says the original PSSR compute requirements made that experience impractical on standard PS5, so QSSR reduces the neural network’s complexity and uses an implementation manually optimized for PS5 performance. Sony’s QSSR announcement gives this high-level description but does not publish the underlying model details.
AI upscaling is not the same as rendering every pixel at the display’s native resolution. Sony has not specified QSSR’s input resolution, output scaling ratio, latency, per-game performance cost, or a controlled image-quality benchmark. Its announcement describes qualitative improvements, not a guaranteed resolution or frame rate.
QSSR vs. PSSR: what is different?
| Technology | Console | What Sony says |
|---|---|---|
| QSSR (Quick Spectral Super Resolution) | Standard PS5 | A performance-oriented evolution of PSSR, with a simplified neural-network architecture and a manually optimized implementation intended to improve detail and stability. Sony, October 1, 2026 |
| PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) | PS5 Pro | Sony’s machine-learning-based upscaling technology. Sony describes it as enhancing image clarity; its 4K and high-frame-rate claims apply to compatible games and their implementations. Sony’s PS5 Pro launch announcement; PlayStation UK product page |
QSSR and PSSR are related, but Sony does not describe them as identical implementations or promise identical results. Sony continues to characterize PSSR as its highest-level upscaling technology on PS5 Pro. The distinction is about the console and implementation—not a claim that QSSR will look or perform the same as PSSR in every game. Sony’s 2026 corporate presentation also describes updated PSSR on PS5 Pro as using machine learning to enhance clarity and deliver 4K visuals at high frame rates in compatible games. Which PS5 games support QSSR?
Sony’s first announced QSSR games are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Updates for both add QSSR as an extra graphics option on PS5; Sony’s Japanese announcement dates those updates to October 2, 2026. PlayStation Blog Japan
QSSR is therefore a game-level feature, not a system-wide setting that automatically applies to every PS5 title. Check that a game has received the relevant update, then look in its graphics options for QSSR. Sony says it will make the technology broadly available to PlayStation developers, but that does not confirm support in any unnamed game. The announcement does not give a complete supported-games list.

What image improvements should players expect?
Sony says QSSR is intended to improve image detail and stability. Insomniac Games and Sucker Punch Productions also describe benefits in their respective titles, including finer detail and greater temporal stability. Those are developer statements, not independent benchmark results, and they do not establish a measured gain that applies across games.
- There is no published QSSR percentage for image-quality improvement, resolution uplift, or performance cost.
- Sony has not said that QSSR always renders natively at 4K or guarantees a particular frame rate.
- Results depend on the game’s implementation and graphics option; Sony’s announcement does not establish that every PS5 game will look sharper with QSSR.
Sony also situates QSSR within its collaboration with AMD, called Project Amethyst, which focuses on applying AI to graphics rendering. That broader collaboration does not add a published QSSR benchmark or change the game-specific nature of support. Sony’s announcement

How to tell whether QSSR is available in a game
- Install the latest update for the PS5 game. Sony says QSSR is added through title updates.
- Open the game’s graphics or display settings and look for QSSR as an option. The exact menu label and available combinations can vary by game.
- Compare the available graphics modes in that title. Sony has not published a universal QSSR frame-rate target or image-quality figure, so use the game’s own options and presentation rather than assuming a fixed result.
