Disabling unnecessary startup apps and supported background activity can reduce demand, but these steps do not add physical RAM. If your usual workload still overwhelms the PC, its memory or overall hardware may be the limit.
What is using my RAM?
- Open Task Manager: Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Check Processes: Select the Memory column to sort by current memory use. Look for familiar apps you are not using, such as a game, launcher, or browser with many open tabs.
- Check overall memory: Open Performance > Memory to see the system’s current memory state.
- Close work you no longer need: Save any work first, then close the app normally. Close unnecessary browser tabs and check whether the PC responds better with your usual workload.
Do not end a process just because its name is unfamiliar. Windows and security processes may be important; focus on apps you recognize. Microsoft recommends monitoring resource use and closing apps that are not in use in its Windows performance guide.
How to reduce memory use at sign-in
Apps that start automatically can add to the load before you open anything yourself. Disable only entries you recognize and do not need immediately after signing in.
- Windows 11: Go to Settings > Apps > Startup, or open Task Manager and select Startup apps.
- Windows 10: Go to Settings > Apps > Startup, or use Task Manager > Startup apps. Labels can vary by Windows release.
- Turn off an unnecessary app, then restart or sign out and back in to see whether the change helps.
Task Manager’s startup impact labels describe the app’s effect during startup; they do not tell you how much RAM it will use later. Avoid disabling an app if you rely on it for a feature such as device controls or security. Microsoft documents these settings in its startup applications guide.

How do I stop apps running in the background?
Windows has background-activity controls for supported apps, but there is no universal background switch for every desktop program. Where a control is available, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the app’s menu, choose Advanced options, and review its background permissions. The exact options depend on the app and Windows version.
Restrict background activity only for apps that do not need to update or notify you when you are not using them. Turning it off can delay expected updates or notifications; leave essential apps enabled. See Microsoft’s background activity instructions.

When should you restart?
If closing unused apps and tabs does not resolve the sluggishness, restart Windows. After it starts again, open only the apps you need and watch Task Manager to see whether one app’s memory use grows unusually.
A restart clears the current session, but it is not a lasting solution if the same app repeatedly consumes memory or your normal workload exceeds what the PC can handle. Microsoft includes restarting among its recommended performance steps in the performance guide.

Does increasing virtual memory add RAM?
No. Virtual memory gives applications virtual addresses and lets Windows move some memory pages between physical RAM and a paging file on disk. Disk storage is slower than RAM, so paging is not equivalent to having more physical memory.
Windows manages the page file by default, adjusting it according to factors including installed RAM, committed memory, and crash-dump needs. For ordinary low-memory troubleshooting, leave it system-managed; do not disable it or enlarge it as a routine way to free RAM. Microsoft’s manual sizing guidance addresses specific allocation circumstances, not a general performance fix. See its explanations of page-file sizing, virtual address space and physical storage, and allocation errors caused by slow page-file growth.

When software changes are not enough
If your everyday combination of games, launchers, browser tabs, and other apps still crowds memory after you have removed unnecessary background load, the PC may be limited by its physical memory or by the workload. Microsoft cautions that “Older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvements from these steps.” Its performance guide recommends considering hardware when software changes do not help enough.

Before buying memory, check the manufacturer’s specifications or support page for your exact computer. Confirm the supported memory type, maximum capacity, available slots, and whether the RAM is replaceable or soldered. Microsoft’s memory overview explains RAM and workload considerations, but the computer maker’s specifications determine what a particular model accepts.
