How to Compare PSSR With Native Resolution and Performance Modes

PSSR can reconstruct a higher-resolution image, but a 4K output does not prove native 4K rendering. Compare each game’s actual resolution, frame-rate behavior, settings, and PSSR version.

To compare PSSR fairly, look beyond the 4K label: check what resolution the game renders internally, what it outputs, how its frame rate behaves, and which visual settings each mode uses. PSSR—PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution—is Sony’s AI-based image reconstruction technology for PS5 Pro. It can upscale a lower-resolution render, but an image sent to a 4K display is not necessarily rendered natively at 4K.

What PSSR does—and what “native resolution” means

PSSR reconstructs a higher-resolution image from the game’s rendered input. Sony describes it as an AI library that analyzes each frame pixel by pixel as it upscales game visuals (Sony, March 16, 2026). “Native resolution” generally refers to the resolution at which the game renders, before an upscaler reconstructs or scales the image. The console’s output resolution is a separate figure: a game can render below 4K and still send a 4K signal to the display.

Sony gives a PS5 Pro mode example that renders at 1440p, uses PSSR to upscale to 4K, and targets 60 fps (PlayStation PS5 Pro developer examples). That is a particular implementation, not a standard resolution or frame rate for every PSSR game.

PSSR is not only useful when converting a sub-4K image to a 4K output. Polyphony Digital’s account of Gran Turismo 7 says the technique can also be effective with a 4K-rendered source (Gran Turismo 7 developer feature). So the presence of PSSR alone does not tell you the game’s internal resolution or how much it changes the final image.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Why mode names and resolution labels are not enough

“Quality,” “Performance,” and “Balanced” are labels for a game’s choices, not standardized technical specifications. A mode may change internal resolution, use dynamic resolution scaling, target a different frame rate, or alter other visual settings. Resolution and frame rate are separate things to compare: a mode that targets more frames per second is not necessarily rendering at the same resolution or with the same effects as another mode.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows illustrates why you need title-specific details. Ubisoft says its PS5 Pro Performance, Balanced, and Quality modes use different internal resolutions with dynamic resolution scaling, and that updated PSSR benefits all three (Sony-hosted Ubisoft article, March 31, 2026). This describes that game, not a rule for every PS5 Pro title.

Other implementations make different trade-offs. Square Enix describes Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s Enhanced mode as running at 60 FPS while using PSSR to achieve resolution on par with Graphics mode (PlayStation PS5 Pro developer examples). A mode name or marketing description can point to the intended trade-off, but it does not replace checking the actual game, patch, and settings.

A fair way to compare PSSR, native rendering, and modes

  1. Choose one game and record the test context. Note the game’s current patch, console model, display output settings, and exact in-game graphics mode. A comparison across different patches or console configurations may not describe the same implementation.
  2. Find the render resolution and output resolution separately. Check whether the game renders natively at the stated resolution, reconstructs from a lower-resolution input, or scales dynamically. Do not infer native 4K rendering from a 4K output signal or a display’s information panel.
  3. Check whether resolution changes during play. If a mode uses dynamic resolution scaling, its internal resolution can vary with scene demands. Treat a single reported resolution as a snapshot unless the source establishes that it is fixed.
  4. Record frame-rate target and observed behavior separately. A target is not a guarantee of a locked frame rate. Note consistency, frame pacing, or responsiveness only when you have reliable measurements or clearly identified observations; a sharper still frame cannot establish better motion performance.
  5. Identify which PSSR version the game uses. Sony announced an upgraded PSSR with a different neural-network and overall algorithm approach on February 27, 2026 (PlayStation.Blog announcement). Sony later described wider support and improvements to stability and fine detail (Sony’s March 16, 2026 update). Sony also says a PS5 Pro setting can enable enhanced PSSR image quality for supported games that use the original version. Check the game’s support and the applicable console setting rather than assuming every title uses the updated version.
  6. Compare the same scenes, including motion. Use matching scenes and camera movement where possible. Inspect fine detail and image stability both in stills and during motion; evaluate frame pacing and responsiveness separately.
  7. Account for settings beyond resolution. Look for differences in ray tracing and other visual features. Sony lists support for 4K TV image clarity and 60Hz and 120Hz displays as PS5 Pro features, but display capability alone does not establish a game’s frame rate or make one mode universally preferable (PlayStation PS5 Pro features).

What Sony’s PSSR figures and examples establish

In February 2026, Sony said PSSR had been used to boost the effective resolution of over 50 PS5 Pro titles (PlayStation.Blog announcement). That is Sony’s reported title count, not an independent performance benchmark. It does not mean every title uses the same PSSR version, renders at the same internal resolution, or reaches a particular frame rate.

Sony’s developer examples show that PSSR can be part of different mode strategies: a 1440p-to-4K reconstruction with a 60 fps target in one example, an Enhanced mode targeting 60 FPS in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and use with a 4K-rendered source in Gran Turismo 7. These examples explain possible approaches; they do not establish a universal image-quality or frame-rate advantage over native rendering.

How to choose between modes

There is no universal winner between PSSR, native-resolution rendering, and a game’s Performance or Quality mode. Decide what matters most in the specific game: image detail and stability, motion smoothness and responsiveness, or visual features such as ray tracing. Then compare modes using their actual implementation and current patch, rather than treating “native” or “4K” as an automatic verdict.
