PSSR—PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution—is Sony’s AI-based upscaling technology for PS5 Pro. It reconstructs a higher-resolution output from the image a game renders internally, which can give developers room to balance visual detail and performance. It does not mean every game renders natively at 4K or receives the same frame-rate boost.
What is PSSR on PS5 Pro?
PSSR is an upscaler built for PS5 Pro. Sony Lead Architect Mark Cerny described it as “an AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel as it upscales them” in Sony’s February 27, 2026 announcement. In practical terms, a game renders an image at an internal resolution, and PSSR reconstructs it at a higher output resolution.
The distinction matters: the output resolution is not necessarily the resolution at which the game originally rendered every pixel. PSSR is a reconstruction technique, not a guarantee of native 4K rendering.
How can PSSR improve image quality and performance?
It can help a game make better use of its rendering budget
Rendering fewer pixels internally can reduce the work required to produce a frame. A developer may use that headroom to target a higher frame rate or spend resources on other visual features, then upscale the result. Ubisoft’s explanation of its PS5 Pro work describes the trade-off: “lowering the render resolution results in higher framerate,” while potentially reducing clarity or introducing visual artifacts. That is a developer’s account of the trade-off in its own title context, not a guaranteed result for every game. Ubisoft’s technical deep dive also notes that dynamic resolution scaling can vary the render resolution in response to GPU demands.

Image quality depends on the game and its implementation
Upscaling aims to preserve or reconstruct detail that would otherwise be lost when a lower-resolution image is enlarged. The visible result can depend on the input image, the game’s implementation, and what is happening on screen. Useful things to look for include fine-detail clarity, shimmer or flicker, stability during motion, and reconstruction artifacts. There is no universal image-quality score or fixed improvement that applies to all PSSR games.
Performance also depends on the game’s workload and the settings its developer chooses. PSSR can be part of a performance strategy, but the upscaler alone does not guarantee a particular frame rate or improvement.

What changed with upgraded PSSR in 2026?
Sony announced an upgraded PSSR on February 27, 2026, describing a substantially different approach to the neural network and overall algorithm. Sony named Resident Evil Requiem as the first game to use it. In its March 16, 2026 rollout announcement, Sony said the updated version improves image stability, fine-detail clarity, and performance consistency, while cautioning that results vary by title. Remedy Entertainment Graphics Technical Director Tatu Aalto also described the upgraded version as improving “image upscaling quality and stability.” These are Sony and developer statements, not independent comparative test results.
Sony said the optional enhanced-PSSR system setting can be enabled for existing PS5 Pro games that already support PSSR. If unexpected visual effects appear, Sony says players can turn the setting off. A system-level option does not add support to every game: the title must support PSSR, and individual results can differ.

Which games support upgraded PSSR?
Sony’s March 2026 announcement named games including Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Control, Alan Wake 2, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Nioh 3, and Rise of the Ronin, alongside titles receiving later patches. Treat that as a dated announcement list, not a complete, current inventory: support can depend on game updates and rollout timing. Check a specific game’s current patch notes and in-game graphics options to confirm its support and available choices.
Sony said on February 27, 2026 that PSSR had been used to boost the effective resolution of over 50 PS5 Pro titles. That is a Sony-published snapshot from that date, not a current exhaustive count or independent measurement.

Is PSSR the same as 4K?
No. PSSR can reconstruct a higher-resolution image for output, including a 4K display, but that does not establish that the game rendered natively at 4K. A title’s internal resolution may be lower or may change dynamically. The exact render resolution, target frame rate, and graphics settings depend on the game and its selected mode.
When comparing modes, look for disclosed internal or dynamic resolution, target and sustained frame rate, detail and motion stability, artifacts, and whether the game uses original or upgraded PSSR. Without comparable measurements, broad rankings of PSSR implementations are not reliable.

Does PSSR work on the regular PS5?
PSSR is the PS5 Pro technology. On October 1, 2026, Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a separate AI upscaling library for the base PS5. Sony describes QSSR as a lower-performance-tier technology; it is not simply PS5 Pro PSSR made available unchanged on standard PS5. See Sony’s QSSR announcement for the distinction.
