To check RAM usage while gaming on Windows, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc. Use Processes to find the game and other apps using resources, then open Performance for a system-level memory view. The readings show what was happening at that moment; high usage by itself does not prove your PC needs more RAM.
Check memory use with Task Manager
- Start the game and reach the scene or activity you want to measure. A reading taken while the game is idle may differ from one taken during a demanding section.
- Open Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc. You can also open it from the Start context menu. Microsoft documents Task Manager and these access methods for Windows 10 and Windows 11: System configuration tools in Windows.
- Select Processes and locate the game in the list. This view helps you see resource use by running applications, including other apps that may be active while you play.
- Select Performance and review the system memory information. This gives you a system-level view, rather than a list of individual apps. Microsoft recommends these views when identifying high resource use: Tips to improve PC performance in Windows.
Processes or Performance: which view should you use?

Use both views to answer different questions: Processes helps identify where app-level use is coming from, while Performance shows the system-wide picture. Neither view is the same as a persistent RAM meter over the game.
Can you see RAM usage without closing the game?
You can open Task Manager while the game is running, but the cited Microsoft guidance does not establish that it will remain visible over every game, Windows build, or exclusive-full-screen setup. If you cannot view it comfortably, try changing the game to windowed or borderless-windowed mode if it offers that option, then check Task Manager. This is a practical workaround, not a guarantee that every game supports it.
Microsoft’s Game Assist feature is a pinned Game Bar overlay for web content such as guides; its FAQ does not describe it as a RAM monitor. Do not rely on it to show memory use: Microsoft Edge Game Assist FAQ.

How to interpret a high reading
A Task Manager reading is a snapshot of resource use at the time you looked. The cited Microsoft guidance does not set a universal gaming RAM threshold, and a high reading alone does not establish that memory capacity is causing poor performance. Compare what you see while the game is in the relevant scene, and use Processes to check whether other running apps are also using resources.
- If an app you do not need is using resources, close it and observe whether that helps.
- Do not assume that closing background apps will resolve every performance problem; Microsoft notes that older hardware can limit the gains from software adjustments.
- Consider a RAM upgrade only after confirming a capacity constraint. Check compatibility for your specific PC before choosing memory; these general Windows instructions do not identify compatible parts.
Windows 10 and Windows 11
The Task Manager guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; that date does not change the basic steps above for opening Task Manager and checking its views.
