Choose the PS5 Disc Edition if you want to play physical PS5 or supported PS4 game discs, or use disc movies. Choose the Digital Edition if you are happy to buy and download games and do not need an optical drive. In Sony’s current Canada comparison, the Disc Edition is listed with 1TB of storage and the Digital Edition with 825GB; those are listed configurations, not guaranteed figures for every model or region.
What’s the practical difference?
The key difference is the optical drive. Both consoles can play digital PS5 and PS4 games, but disc playback requires a console with a disc drive installed. Sony’s PlayStation 5 Support says purchasing and downloading games requires an internet connection and signing in to a PlayStation account.

The storage figures above come from Sony’s Canada product comparison, so check the specifications for the exact model and market you are buying. Which PS5 should you buy?
Choose the Disc Edition if you want physical games or movies
- You already own PS5 or supported PS4 game discs and want to keep playing them.
- You want the option to use physical game discs rather than relying only on digital purchases and downloads.
- You want a console drive that can play supported disc movies. Sony lists 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD playback for its PS5 Disc Drive.
Choose the Digital Edition if you do not need an optical drive
- You buy games digitally and are comfortable downloading them from PlayStation Store.
- You do not need to play physical PS4 or PS5 game discs or disc movies.
- You prefer a console configuration without a built-in disc drive. Sony’s Canada page lists the Digital Edition at 825GB, compared with 1TB for the Disc Edition, but those are regional configuration specifications rather than universal guarantees.
Can you add a disc drive to the Digital Edition later?
Some Digital Edition owners can add Sony’s detachable drive, but compatibility depends on the console’s model group. Sony’s setup instructions cover CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups and require an internet connection to pair the drive during setup. Sony’s Canada product page describes an additional drive option for CFI-2000/2100 slim model groups. Since the supported groups differ across these Sony pages, check the exact CFI model number against the instructions and product details for your region before buying a drive.

- Find the console’s CFI model number and confirm that Sony lists that model group as compatible with the detachable drive.
- Obtain the drive designed for the compatible PS5 model group.
- During setup, connect the console to the internet so it can pair with the drive, as required by Sony’s disc-drive setup instructions.
Do not assume that every older Digital Edition can accept the detachable drive; Sony specifies supported model groups rather than universal compatibility.
Does the Digital Edition have less storage?
On Sony’s current Canada product page, the listed configuration is 825GB for the Digital Edition and 1TB for the Disc Edition. These are nominal configuration figures, and the cited page does not give the amount of usable free space after system software. They may not describe every regional SKU or generation.

Either configuration can expand storage with a compatible M.2 SSD. Sony directs owners to check its current size and performance requirements and install current system software before using expansion storage. Its PS5 expandable-storage guide explains compatibility and use with supported games and media apps. Check those requirements rather than choosing an SSD based only on capacity or appearance.

There is no verified current price comparison here, so the Disc Edition cannot be called cheaper or better value in general. Compare local prices for both console configurations, the games you expect to play, and—if considering the Digital Edition with an add-on—the compatible drive. Physical discs may suit someone who wants disc access, but actual game prices, resale options, and savings vary and are not established by Sony’s compatibility information.
