Stranger Than Heaven follows Makoto Daito across five Japanese cities and five decades, beginning with his arrival from San Francisco in 1915. SEGA describes its world as a “Japan that might have been”: the cities and years draw on real references, but the announced story is fictionalized rather than a documented account of historical events.
What is Stranger Than Heaven about?
Makoto Daito is born in San Francisco to an American father and Japanese mother. According to SEGA’s story overview, he is treated as an outcast because of his appearance and loses his parents while young. In 1915, he sneaks aboard a ship bound for Japan, his mother’s homeland, hoping to find a place where he belongs.
On the voyage, Makoto meets Orpheus, a smuggler, and Yu Shinjo, another boy of mixed heritage who also wants a new start in Japan. Xbox’s May 2026 recap identifies Yu as a friend and rival to Makoto. The two begin building lives in Kokura, where Makoto becomes involved with the city’s underworld.
Orpheus recognizes Makoto’s musical ability, and music grows into a major part of his life. A later Xbox Wire cast feature describes Makoto working as a showman: he selects setlists, arranges the band, assigns performers, and designs stage productions as he tours. Director Mikinobu Abe says Makoto can “find the music in everyday life, memorizing the sounds as ideas for future compositions.”

Is Stranger Than Heaven based on real history?
It draws on real Japanese place names and historical periods, but SEGA frames the setting as a fictionalized “Japan that might have been,” with cities inspired by places from Japan’s past. That framing supports describing the game as alternate or imagined history—not as a faithful reconstruction of events or a dramatization of a specific historical theory.
