The right controller depends on which Ape Escape you mean. For the original game converted for PS4 and PS5, Sony lists DualSense and DUALSHOCK 4 as playable controllers; that conversion does not support the original PlayStation’s peripherals. The separate PS3 Move experience is a different setup: it uses a PlayStation Move motion controller and PlayStation Eye camera.

Why the game version changes the answer
The PS4/PS5 Store entry is a conversion of the original PlayStation Ape Escape, not a compatibility statement for every game in the series. Its listing names DualSense and DUALSHOCK 4 and says original PlayStation peripherals are unsupported. A Move controller is therefore not the recommended choice for that listing.
The PS3 Move experience is a separate game and hardware arrangement. Sony’s 2009 announcement named an Ape Escape working title among the Move games in development, but that announcement alone does not establish full compatibility details for every regional release. Sony’s announcement.
How PlayStation Move motion controls work on PS3
Move is not just a handheld stick that any PlayStation controller can replace. The PlayStation Eye camera tracks the colored sphere on the Move motion controller; sensors in the controller also detect its movement and orientation. Game support still matters. Sony cautions that developers decide how much motion tracking a title uses: a Move game may not implement full 1:1 motion control. The presence of a Move accessory or a camera connection does not by itself guarantee a particular control scheme. PlayStation Move FAQ.
What the Navigation Controller does—and does not do
The Move Navigation Controller is a secondary input device with a left stick and directional buttons. In compatible games, Sony says a DUALSHOCK 3 or SIXAXIS can be used instead of the Navigation Controller. Neither one takes over the Move motion controller’s sensing and camera-tracking role. Sony also states that the Navigation Controller does not support the older SIXAXIS motion sensor; its manual specifies PS3 system software version 3.40 or later for the Navigation Controller. Check compatibility before buying Move hardware
- Identify the exact game. Determine whether you mean the PS4/PS5 Store conversion or a PS3 Move release; their supported controllers are not interchangeable by assumption.
- Match the controller to the listed version. For the conversion, follow Sony’s listed DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4 support. For a PS3 Move game, check that the particular release supports Move and identify its required camera and any secondary input.
- Check camera and console requirements. The PS3 Move arrangement uses PlayStation Eye tracking. Sony’s support page lists Move controllers for PS3, PS4, and PS5, but says game controls and calibration vary. On PS5, using a PlayStation Camera requires the PlayStation Camera adapter. - Verify the full setup for your region and release. Sony’s general Move documentation does not provide a complete compatibility matrix for every regional PS3 Move Ape Escape release or original PlayStation setup, so confirm the game’s own requirements rather than relying on broad accessory compatibility.
What about playing the original PlayStation release with analog controls?
The available compatibility information does not establish a complete controller matrix for every original PlayStation setup or adapter. Do not assume a modern controller or adapter will work: check documentation for the exact game, platform, and hardware combination before purchasing.
