Esports organizations can offer access to digitally native audiences and newer ways to earn revenue, but their economics may depend heavily on game publishers, league terms and sponsors. Traditional sports teams often sit within more established systems for broadcast, commercial and matchday income, yet high costs can still leave clubs unprofitable. The available evidence does not show that either type of investment delivers better returns.
How the business models differ
An esports organization is not a uniform kind of asset. A team may compete in one game or several, and its league access, commercial rights and revenue-sharing arrangements can differ by publisher and competition. That makes the specific game ecosystem and contract terms central to evaluating a team.
Traditional sports teams also differ by sport and geography. European club football offers a useful example of a mature rights-holder system, with revenue from broadcast rights, commercial partnerships, competition rewards and matchday receipts. Those established channels create a different revenue mix from one that relies heavily on a game-specific league, sponsorship or digital-content arrangements.
Franchising has been proposed as one way esports teams might build longer-term narratives and commercial income beyond prize winnings. A 2019 PwC analysis discussed possibilities including content, advertising, ticketing, merchandise and potentially media rights. That was business-model analysis, not proof that every franchise model succeeded or remains in place.

What the financial evidence does—and does not—show
The available figures describe different populations and measures, so they cannot be treated as a direct profitability comparison between an esports team and a traditional club.
| Evidence | What it says | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Riot Games’ League of Legends partner-team ecosystem | In a 2024 strategy explanation covering the LCK, LCS and LEC, Riot said team costs had grown faster than revenue, access to capital had become limited and cash reserves had dwindled. Riot described a proposed model with fixed stipends and revenue sharing from digital-content sales. | It is one publisher’s account of specified leagues, not a financial profile of every esports organization. It does not provide comparable team valuations or realized investment returns. |
| European club football | UEFA’s February 2026 summary reported record revenue of €28.6 billion for 2024 and forecast revenue above €30 billion for 2025. It also reported that top-division clubs returned to operating profitability in 2024 after five years, while their combined pre-tax losses were €1.1 billion. | These are aggregate figures for UEFA’s reporting scope, not a result for every club or all traditional sports. Operating profitability and pre-tax losses are different measures and can coexist. |
| European club investment activity | UEFA recorded 123 investment transactions across men’s and women’s European clubs in 2025. | A transaction count does not reveal total capital invested, deal prices, valuation multiples or investor returns. |
Riot’s account and UEFA’s figures concern different entities and scopes. UEFA’s European football revenue cannot be compared directly with Riot’s qualitative description of partner-team finances. Nor does either source provide the comparable private-market valuations, entry prices or realized returns needed to rank esports organizations against traditional teams as investments.

Why growth and established income are not the same as returns
Esports: rights and revenue can shift with the ecosystem
Riot said the earlier League of Legends partnership model required teams to pay approximately US$10 million to participate and gave teams 50% of certain league revenues—not 50% of profits. Its 2024 article described a proposed replacement for teams in the LCK, LCS and LEC: a fixed stipend plus a share of revenue from LoL Esports digital-content sales, with allocations intended to reward participation, competitive performance and fandom. These were publisher-described terms at the time, not a guarantee of current contract terms. A prospective investor should verify the actual agreement in force.
The case illustrates why a headline revenue-share percentage is not enough. Investors need to know which revenue is included, who controls the underlying rights, what costs sit ahead of distributions, and whether the publisher or league can change the terms.

Traditional sports: a deeper revenue base can still carry heavy costs
UEFA attributes long-run revenue growth in European club football to competition rewards, broadcast rights, commercial partnerships and gate receipts. It also identifies rising non-player wages and other operating costs as pressures. The coexistence of operating profitability and aggregate pre-tax losses in its 2024 figures is a reminder to distinguish operating performance from the final result after other costs and items.
Investor interest is not a return record
Deloitte’s 2025 outlook described a “barbell” pattern in sports investment: interest in established premium properties as well as emerging, high-growth sports. It included esports among digitally native sports attracting investor attention, particularly with younger demographics. This is an industry outlook on investor interest, not evidence of realized esports returns or proof that esports is riskier or safer than a particular traditional team.

A practical diligence framework
Before considering an investment, examine the rights and cash flows of the specific organization rather than relying on audience growth, cultural relevance or a league-level headline.
| Diligence area | Questions to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Rights and control | Who controls the game, league slot, media rights, team marks and revenue-sharing rules? Can terms change unilaterally? What happens if the game or competition changes? | Esports rights are tied to publishers and game-specific ecosystems; Riot’s partner-team model shows that participation and revenue-sharing terms can change. |
| Revenue quality | Which income is recurring and contracted, and which depends on sponsorship renewals, prize winnings, creator activity or events? Who receives proceeds from digital content? | Similar labels can conceal very different levels of predictability and control. |
| Costs and cash runway | How do player compensation, staff, facilities, travel and league fees compare with cash receipts? What financing is needed to keep operating, and for how long? | Riot described revenue-cost growth divergence and depleted reserves in its partner ecosystem; UEFA also identifies operating-cost pressure in European football. |
| Audience and asset durability | Is there repeat engagement and a durable fan identity across seasons? How dependent is the business on one game, star, title or stretch of competitive success? | Established premium assets and emerging digitally native properties have different maturity profiles, as Deloitte’s 2025 outlook indicates. |
| Valuation and exit | What transaction evidence supports the asking price? Are minority shares transferable? Who could buy the stake, and what exit mechanisms are actually available? | The cited evidence supplies neither comparable esports deal valuations nor a realized-return dataset; the 123 European club transactions do not disclose comparable deal values or returns. |
| Governance and regulation | Which publisher, league, federation, competition and jurisdictional rules apply to ownership, spending and transfers? | Those rules can constrain the rights, costs and exit options available to an owner. |
How to interpret the comparison
Traditional sports teams may offer a more mature mix of established revenue channels, while esports can offer exposure to digitally native audiences and evolving forms of monetization. Neither characteristic settles whether a particular deal is attractive. The decisive questions are what rights the investor actually owns, how dependable the cash flows are, what costs and future funding needs sit behind them, and whether the price and exit terms are supported by deal-specific evidence.
