Which platform are you playing on, and what went wrong: the update will not download, the game crashes or will not launch after updating, or a save is missing? The fixes differ between PC launchers, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. Start with the branch that matches your symptom, and back up PC saves before removing game files.
First, identify what failed
A download that cannot start or resume is different from a completed update that left damaged game files, and both differ from a save that is missing or cannot load. Use the platform-specific steps below rather than applying one universal fix.

If the update or download will not finish
If the download is stuck, will not begin, or reports an error, first note the exact message and check the platform or launcher’s current service-status and support pages. CD PROJEKT RED’s guidance covered here does not establish whether PlayStation Network, Xbox, Nintendo, Steam, GOG, or Epic is currently experiencing an outage, nor does it provide a universal remedy for stalled downloads. Avoid treating file verification, cache clearing, DNS changes, or reinstalling as a guaranteed download fix.
PlayStation: unable to claim the free next-gen upgrade
If you own the game but cannot claim the PlayStation next-gen upgrade, check whether the game’s region code matches the region of your PlayStation account. CD PROJEKT RED identifies a region mismatch as an eligibility issue; it does not explain every failed download or network error.

If the game crashes or will not launch after updating
PC: verify installed files in the correct launcher
CD PROJEKT RED says corrupted installed files can cause crashes, graphical glitches, or launch failures. Use the launcher where your copy is installed; its verification process may take several minutes.
- GOG GALAXY: Owned games > The Witcher 3 > Customize > Manage installation > Verify/Repair.
- Steam: Library > right-click The Witcher 3 > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
- Epic Games Launcher: Library > three dots beside The Witcher 3 > Manage > Verify.
- Battle.net: Select The Witcher 3 > cog icon > Scan and Repair.
PC: continue crash checks incrementally
If verifying files does not resolve the crash, CD PROJEKT RED’s PC checklist recommends checking system requirements, closing nonessential applications (including antivirus or antimalware applications), checking the PC for malware, and then considering a clean graphics-driver reinstall. The support guidance notes that an older graphics driver can sometimes help, but that is not a guaranteed fix.

A clean driver reinstall is an advanced step. If you use Display Driver Uninstaller, follow the instructions from the GPU or tool vendor carefully. Do not remove game folders as a substitute for these checks; if you decide to reinstall the game cleanly, protect your saves first.
PlayStation: power down fully before testing again
For a crash, CD PROJEKT RED’s PlayStation instructions say to shut down the console rather than leave it in Rest Mode. Wait for the indicator lights to stop, unplug the console for at least 30 seconds, reconnect it, and test the game. If the issue remains, try loading an earlier save.

CD PROJEKT RED has a separate general cache article for performance problems, crashes, and black screens that specifies unplugging for at least two minutes. These are different instructions: use the guidance for your console model and issue rather than combining the two timings.
Xbox: clear cached data with a full power cycle
Shut down the Xbox, unplug its power cable for at least two minutes, reconnect it, and restart the console. CD PROJEKT RED says this clears potentially corrupted cached data without erasing games, data, or saves. If the crash continues, try loading an earlier save.

Nintendo Switch: check game data, then reset cache
- Check for corrupted game data: System Settings > Data Management > Manage Software > The Witcher 3 > Check for Corrupt Data.
- If needed, reset the system cache: System Settings > System > Formatting Options > Reset Cache. CD PROJEKT RED says this does not delete save data.
- If the console freezes, hold the Power button for at least 12 seconds to force it off. With the console powered off, remove the game cartridge and/or microSD card, restart, perform a system update, and try the game again.
If a save is missing or will not load
PC: check the local save folder and back it up before reinstalling
The official local save location is %userprofile%DocumentsThe Witcher 3gamesaves. Check that folder and confirm you are looking at the expected Windows user profile. Before a clean reinstall, copy the saves to a separate safe location, such as another drive or an external device, and confirm the copy exists. Do not delete the Documents folder or rely on cloud synchronization as your only backup.
CD PROJEKT RED’s clean-install sequence is to disable cloud saves, uninstall the game, remove the game folders, reinstall without mods, restore the backed-up saves, and optionally turn cloud saves back on. Follow that sequence only after you have a separate save copy. Removing files before confirming a backup can destroy local progress.

Cross-progression: check the linked account and cloud icon
To move progress between supported platforms, CD PROJEKT RED’s current support instructions call for the latest game patch and the same linked CD PROJEKT RED account on both platforms. Cross-progression uses cloud saves; it provides the latest save for each save type, not a list of every historical save.
- Update the game to the latest patch and connect it to your CD PROJEKT RED account.
- Create a save on the source platform and check for the cloud icon beside it.
- On the destination platform, sign in to that same account through My Rewards, then check Load Game for the cloud save.
PlayStation: “missing DLC” may mean missing content, not a lost save
If the message names DLC while you load a save, first install the named DLC. If it is already installed but the game still reports it missing, check the PlayStation account and console settings specified by CD PROJEKT RED: make sure the account is activated as the Primary PS4, or that Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled on PS5. These checks apply to PlayStation; they are not general save-recovery steps for other platforms.
When to contact platform or game support
Contact the platform or launcher support team for an update that cannot start or resume, especially if its service-status page or error message points to an account, purchase, or network issue. Include the platform, store or launcher, exact error text, and whether the download ever completed. For persistent crashes, give support the platform, launcher where relevant, when the crash began, and the steps already tried. Do not delete local saves or game folders while diagnosing the problem unless a separate backup is confirmed.
