Your Xbox Game Pass save can sync to the Xbox cloud when the game supports Xbox save services and you play while connected to Xbox network. Before a title leaves the catalog, connect the device, let the game save, exit normally, and wait for synchronization to finish. That protects progress from being stranded only on one device; it does not by itself guarantee you can still launch the game after its catalog access changes.
How to sync your save before a Game Pass game leaves
- Connect to the internet and sign in. Use the Xbox account you played with on the console or PC.
- Open the game and let any pending sync finish. Avoid starting an offline session on another device while the first device may still have unsynced progress.
- Save in the game, then exit normally. Microsoft’s developer documentation says supported game-save services attempt to upload data when a session ends while connected, and may also attempt sync periodically during play. Individual games can implement this differently.
- Wait for confirmation where available. On PC and handheld experiences, check the Game Save Sync Indicator if it is available on your device. Xbox announced the indicator in January 2026 to show cloud-save status.
Microsoft’s [Game Saves documentation] describes the supported sync flow: local and cloud data are synchronized through the game-save service associated with the account. It is developer documentation, not a promise that every title uses an identical interface or timing.
How to tell whether Xbox cloud save sync finished
On PC or a handheld
Look for the Game Save Sync Indicator where the feature is available. Xbox said it provides visibility into cloud-save status across PC and handheld experiences in its January 21, 2026 update. The announcement does not establish that the indicator appears in every app, game, or device configuration, so confirm the current interface on your device.
On console or when no indicator appears
There may not be a separate confirmation screen you can check after every game. The safest practical sequence is to stay online, allow the game to complete its save, close it normally, and give synchronization time to finish before switching devices or going offline. If the game presents a sync message, wait for it rather than dismissing or interrupting it.

What to do if Xbox asks you to choose a save
A conflict can occur when both the local copy and the cloud copy have changed since the last sync. Microsoft’s documentation says the system prompts the player to resolve that conflict. Compare the displayed progress or timestamps, if available, and choose the copy that contains your latest progress. Do not choose based only on “local” or “cloud”: either may be newer if one device played offline.
What happens if you played offline?
Offline play can leave the latest progress only on the device. Microsoft says offline mode saves locally and does not sync the current session to the cloud. Reconnect to Xbox network on that device, open the game, and allow it to synchronize before playing on another device. Starting elsewhere first can create competing local and cloud versions.

Will the save still be there if the game leaves Game Pass?
Save preservation and game access are separate. The official material cited here explains cloud synchronization and supported cross-device saves, but does not establish a universal rule for whether or how a particular title remains launchable after its catalog access changes. Check the title’s current leaving notice and store listing, and confirm what applies to the edition and platform you use.
If you buy the game to keep playing, use the same Xbox account and check that the purchased version is compatible with your existing save. A save being in the cloud does not guarantee that every version, storefront, or platform can use it.

Can you continue the same save on Xbox and PC?
Cross-device carryover is documented for Xbox Play Anywhere titles, not every Game Pass game or PC edition. Xbox says supported Play Anywhere games carry saves, add-ons, and achievements across supported PC, console, and handheld devices when you sign in with your Xbox account. Its May 21, 2025 Play Anywhere announcement scopes that statement to the Play Anywhere collection. Check whether your specific game is listed and whether the PC version you use is the relevant Xbox version.
Xbox reported in January 2026 that more than 1,000 games supported Xbox Play Anywhere; that is the collection’s size, not a measure of save reliability or a claim about all games. See the January 2026 update for the announcement.
