There is no universal way to transfer an Xbox save to Steam or another platform. Whether your progress can move depends on the specific game and whether its publisher supports cross-save, account linking, or an official export/import route. If you stay within Xbox’s supported ecosystem, an eligible Xbox Play Anywhere game can sync progress between supported devices using the same Xbox account. Check the exact game and destination before buying another version or deleting local save data.
What happens to your save when a Game Pass game leaves?
A game leaving Game Pass means you may lose access to play it through the subscription; it does not, by itself, establish that your save has been deleted or that it can be moved to another storefront. The available documentation does not establish a universal Xbox save-export tool for consumers. Save retention and access can depend on the game and the platform where the save was created, so do not treat subscription access, cloud storage, and cross-platform transfer as the same thing.
Xbox’s July 21, 2025 announcement describes cloud-playable console games, including Game Pass titles, appearing in the Xbox PC app’s library and play history so players can find and continue games in the Xbox ecosystem. That is a way to find and continue supported games within Xbox; it is not documentation of an export to Steam or another store.
Can an Xbox save move to another platform?
Only if the specific game supports a route between your source and destination. “Cloud save” alone is not enough: two versions can use separate save systems even when each has cloud storage. Confirm the exact platforms at both ends—for example, Xbox console to Steam, or the Windows Xbox app to Steam—and whether the game requires a linked publisher account or a one-time migration.

- Xbox console or Xbox cloud session to another Xbox-supported device: This may work for eligible titles with Xbox cloud continuity or Play Anywhere support. Sign in to the same Xbox account and let synchronization finish.
- Xbox to Steam, Epic, or another storefront: Do not assume the save will transfer. The game’s publisher must support that route, such as through shared account progression or an official import/export feature.
- Manual file copying or USB transfer: There is no general method established by the official documentation reviewed. File locations, formats, account binding, encryption, and import support vary by game.
Use Xbox Play Anywhere for supported Xbox-to-PC continuity
Xbox Play Anywhere is the clearest supported path when the exact game is eligible. Xbox’s August 28, 2025 update said more than 1,000 games supported Play Anywhere at that time. For eligible titles, progress—including saves, add-ons, and achievements—travels between supported Xbox consoles, PC, and handheld devices when you are signed in to the same Xbox account. That statement does not establish compatibility with Steam or other third-party storefront editions.
Xbox announced in January 2026 that its Game Save Sync Indicator was rolling out across PC and handheld experiences to show cloud-save status. If the indicator is available in your experience, wait until it shows synchronization is complete before closing the game or switching devices. The feature’s rollout does not make an unsupported game cross-save compatible.

Check the game before buying it on another store
- Identify where the save was made. Note whether you played on an Xbox console, through Xbox cloud gaming, or in the Windows Xbox app. Do not assume those sources use the same save route to a third-party version.
- Identify the exact destination. “PC” is not specific enough: distinguish the Xbox PC app from Steam, Epic, or another storefront, and check that the destination edition is covered.
- Read the game publisher’s official support page or FAQ. Look for explicit cross-save, cross-progression, account-linking, or save-migration instructions naming both your source and destination platforms. If only cloud saves are mentioned, ask whether those saves are shared across storefronts.
- Follow the publisher’s stated account or migration steps. If a separate publisher account or one-time export/import is required, use the official instructions and confirm the destination save appears before removing or overwriting data.
- Keep the original save intact until you verify the result. Avoid deleting local data or relying on manual copying unless the game’s official instructions specifically support it.
Why a Steam Cloud save does not automatically import an Xbox save
Steam Cloud can store saves and other user-specific data for games that use it, but it is a Steam-side storage feature—not a general Xbox-to-Steam converter. Steam’s support guidance directs players to the game developer for help locating or transferring local files. A Steam copy may restore access to the game, but whether it can read an Xbox save depends on that title’s implementation.
Why cross-save has to be implemented by the game
Microsoft’s Game Development Kit documentation describes save sharing as a developer-configured feature: publishers set access policies in Partner Center and initialize save providers in the game. The documentation also describes PC cross-save between console, PC, and Xbox game streaming as an implementation choice. In practice, platform cloud saves are not interchangeable by default; the publisher must build and support the route you need.

What to do if the game’s instructions are unclear
Ask the game’s official support team whether your exact source and target versions share saves, whether you need to link an account, and whether the process is automatic or requires a one-time transfer. Include the game title, the platform where the save was created, and the platform or storefront you want to use. Without those details, no reliable game-specific transfer procedure can be prescribed.
