The lower-cost choice depends on the specific games you’ll play, how many months you’ll subscribe, your local prices, and whether you need to keep access to a game after you stop paying.
What you’re paying for: a changing catalog or selected games
Game Pass is paid access to a rotating catalog, not ownership of every included game. Xbox says access to a Game Pass title lasts until your subscription expires or is canceled, or until that game leaves the catalog. Buying a game is the more direct fit if you want continued access to that particular title without relying on its catalog status or an active subscription.
Game Pass plans differ in price, library and features. Xbox’s product page lists 500+ games for Ultimate, 200+ for Premium, 50+ for Essential, and 300+ PC games for PC Game Pass; these are Xbox’s current product-page counts, accessed October 3, 2026, and do not guarantee that a particular game is available in your region or on your platform. Check the current plan and catalog details before deciding.
How to compare the cost fairly
- Set the market and plan. Use the recurring price for the plan available in your region, including any relevant tax or promotion. Don’t treat a US price as a global price.
- Make a list of the games you’ll actually play. Check each title’s current availability in the relevant catalog, plan, region and platform. A large library count is not a substitute for checking your own list.
- Choose a realistic time window. Estimate how many months you would keep the subscription during that period, rather than multiplying the monthly price by a year if you would cancel during gaps.
- Calculate the subscription cost. Multiply the local recurring price by those months. Add the value of a bundled benefit, such as console online multiplayer, only if you would otherwise pay for it and would actually use it.
- Price the same game list as purchases. Use current store prices and sale prices where appropriate. Compare the same games over the same period; don’t assume a subscription catalog will remain unchanged.
- Add any purchases needed for lasting access. If you want to keep playing a catalog game after it leaves or after your subscription ends, include its purchase price in the Game Pass scenario too.
What the announced US prices mean
Xbox announced US recurring prices effective April 21, 2026: Game Pass Ultimate at $22.99 per month and PC Game Pass at $13.99 per month. Xbox said regional prices may vary; those figures are not a universal price list. In the same announcement, Xbox said Ultimate had decreased from $29.99 and PC Game Pass from $16.49. Verify the current local price and any promotion before calculating your own total. Xbox’s April 21, 2026 price announcement explains the changes.

There is no honest universal break-even number without knowing your region, chosen tier, subscription months, games and purchase prices. A useful comparison is your own basket:
- Game Pass total: monthly local plan price × the months you would subscribe, plus purchase costs for any included games you want to keep playing when access ends.
- Buying total: the current prices of the same games, using sale prices when they apply.
If you only need access while a game is in the catalog, its separate purchase price need not be part of the subscription total. If uninterrupted, ongoing access matters, count that future purchase rather than treating subscription access as ownership.

Which option fits different play habits?
Game Pass may cost less if you play several included games in a short stretch
Subscription access can be economical when the specific games you want are included in your plan and you play them during a limited run of paid months. The comparison improves if you use a bundled feature you would otherwise pay for, but only count that benefit if it genuinely replaces a cost for you.
Buying may cost less if you play a small number of games over a long time
If you return to only one or two titles over many months, add up the subscription months you would need to keep access and compare that total with the purchase prices. Buying selected games is also the stronger fit when you want ongoing access regardless of subscription status or catalog changes.

A mixed approach can suit an uneven schedule
You do not have to choose one method for every game. Subscribe during months when the catalog contains several games you plan to play, then cancel during gaps and buy the titles you expect to revisit. Include any later purchase in the cost comparison if you want to keep a game after it leaves the catalog or your subscription lapses.
Cloud gaming changes to account for in November 2026
Xbox announced monthly cloud gaming allowances beginning in November 2026: 15 hours for Ultimate, 10 for Premium and 5 for Essential. Xbox said it would share extra-hour pricing and more details before the change takes effect. If cloud gaming is a major part of your use, include the announced monthly allowance in your decision and revisit the calculation when Xbox publishes the additional costs. Xbox estimated that the change would affect 4% of Game Pass subscribers; that is the company’s estimate, and the announcement did not provide a denominator or methodology. One catalog detail for Call of Duty players
Under Xbox’s April 2026 announcement, future Call of Duty games are not scheduled to join Ultimate or PC Game Pass at launch; Xbox said they would arrive during the following holiday season, about a year later. Existing Call of Duty games already in the catalog were to remain. If a new release is central to your calculation, don’t assume it will be available at launch through those plans; check the title’s current listing and release details.
