You can play a new game for less by checking whether it is included in a subscription you would use, waiting for a real discount, or comparing physical and digital prices. The cheapest route depends on the exact game, your platform and region, and how long you expect to play—not simply whether a subscription is available.
Choose the route that fits the game and how you play

There is no universally cheapest choice. A player focused on one game may spend less by waiting for a purchase discount; someone who plays several games included in a subscription may find the recurring fee worthwhile. Compare current local costs against the games and play time you actually expect to get.
Check the subscription catalog before paying
A subscription provides access to a catalog for a recurring fee; it does not mean you own each included game. Catalogs, plan terms, and availability can change, so verify that the specific title is currently included for your plan, platform, and region. Also consider how much of the subscription you would use beyond that one game.
Launch inclusion is title-specific
Some games are included in a subscription at launch, but that is not a promise that every new release will be. For example, Xbox Wire reported on May 5, 2025, that Gears of War: Reloaded was scheduled to launch on August 26, 2025, at a US$39.99 SRP on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, PlayStation 5, and Steam, and to be available at launch with Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission describes subscriptions as recurring payments for access to a digital game library, a model it says has been described as “virtually renting games as opposed to buying them.” That is the report’s characterization, not a legal ruling about ownership. Wait for a discount, and compare the exact offer
Waiting can lower the purchase price while leaving you with access to the game through that purchase, but an advertised discount is only useful if it is for the right product. Check the edition, platform, seller, final price, and offer end date before checkout. Prices and promotions change; Microsoft’s Xbox games store, for example, cautions that savings depend on availability and offers may change. Check the Xbox games store.

When available, price history can help you judge whether today’s offer is worth taking, but do not treat a sale label alone as proof that it is the best price. No particular price-history service or current cross-platform comparison is established here.
Compare physical and digital versions
Physical and digital prices can differ, so compare both when the game and your hardware support both formats. Include shipping in the physical total, and check what the disc or card actually contains: some physical releases still require a substantial download. Resale may affect the value of a physical copy, but terms and practical options vary; confirm them for the specific game and market.

Nintendo provides a platform-specific example: beginning in May 2026, new Nintendo-published digital games exclusive to Switch 2 will have an MSRP different from physical versions, while retail partners set their own prices for both formats. Refund rules differ by platform and region, and eligibility may depend on when you request a refund and whether you downloaded, streamed, or played the content. Check the applicable policy before purchase rather than assuming you can try a game and return it.

- Steam: Valve says it will issue a refund on request for a game requested within 14 days of purchase and played for less than two hours. You can still submit a request outside those stated rules for review. See Steam’s refund guidance.
- PlayStation, United States: The US support guidance generally requires a game or DLC refund request within 14 days and that the content has not been downloaded or streamed, unless it is faulty. See PlayStation’s refund guidance.
- Nintendo, United States: Nintendo says payments through Nintendo Account services are generally final and non-refundable unless Nintendo authorizes a refund or applicable law requires one. See Nintendo’s digital-products policy.

A quick way to decide
- Find the exact game, edition, and platform you want; confirm regional availability.
- Check whether it is in a subscription catalog you already use or would otherwise pay for, and confirm the current plan terms.
- Compare the subscription’s local cost with the current purchase prices for both physical and digital versions, including shipping where relevant.
- If you can wait, check the seller and offer end date again before buying; prices and catalog listings can change.
- Read the refund terms for your region and platform before checkout, especially if refund eligibility depends on downloading or playing.
