A player brings contract terms—including salary and guarantees—into the evaluation, while the trade’s precise salary-cap effect depends on the transaction, contract, league year, and applicable accounting rules.
What can NFL teams trade, and when?
Teams may negotiate trades at any time before or during the NFL Draft, and trades also take place outside draft time. The league’s rules describe the available assets as draft picks and current NFL players to whom a club holds the rights. The NFL’s 2026 trade tracker includes exchanges involving future selections, and its official transaction list records deals by month.
How a trade is approved during the draft
- The clubs agree on the terms. A deal can exchange picks, player rights, or a combination of those assets.
- Both clubs contact the NFL Head Table. During the draft, each team relays the same trade information to the league.
- The league reviews the trade. The NFL must approve a draft-day trade before announcing it.
How draft-pick trades work
A pick is identified by its draft year and round, so a trade can involve selections in different rounds or years. Teams can also exchange future picks; the NFL’s 2026 tracker provides examples of those deals. The specific selections—and any stated conditions attached to them—are what determine what each club gives up and receives. A pick trade does not, by itself, involve a player contract.
What happens to a player’s contract in a trade?
When a club trades a player whose rights it holds, the player’s existing contract terms are part of what the acquiring team evaluates. Salary, guarantees, and timing can all affect how attractive the deal is; the contract’s headline value alone may not explain the protections attached to the compensation.

What “fully guaranteed” means
NFL Football Operations describes three types of guarantee protection: skill, salary-cap, and injury. Under its explanation, compensation protected against all three is fully guaranteed at signing. If it is protected against only one or two, it is partially guaranteed. Those distinctions matter when comparing contract terms in a trade; the label or total value alone does not tell the full story.
How a trade affects the salary cap
The salary cap is set for a particular season. The NFL reported these per-club figures:

Those league-wide limits do not reveal the cap charge for a particular trade. A trade headline alone is not enough to determine whether a team gains cap room, takes on a charge, or faces another accounting consequence. That calculation requires the specific player and contract, the transaction date, the league year, and the applicable accounting rules. The published cap limit is context, not a transaction-level calculation.

The NFL’s published 2026–27 important dates state that a drafted rookie who has not signed cannot be traded to another club in 2026. Until the 2027 Draft, that player may sign a player contract only with the club that drafted him. This is a rule for the stated period, not a timeless description of rookie-trade eligibility.
