Repeated exposure can make familiar violent imagery feel less shocking. Researchers call this kind of diminished response habituation or desensitization. Studies offer some evidence that repeated exposure to violent media—and, in one experiment, repeated play of a game—can change particular emotional responses. They do not show that every player changes, or that feeling less during a game means accepting or tolerating real-world violence.
Why familiar violent scenes can lose their shock
A first encounter with graphic imagery may stand out because it is unfamiliar. When similar scenes recur, the emotional response to that stimulus can diminish. This is often described as habituation; desensitization is also used for reduced emotional responsiveness after repeated exposure.
That explanation concerns a change in response to familiar material. It does not, by itself, establish a change in a player’s values, empathy in everyday life, or behavior. Nor does a quieter reaction necessarily mean a player is deliberately becoming indifferent: the studies measure specific responses under specific conditions.
What studies of repeated exposure have found
Repeated movie scenes: less sympathy and more enjoyment in the short term
In a 2009 study, Fanti showed participants nine violent movie scenes and nine comedy scenes. The study abstract reports that repeated exposure reduced the short-term psychological impact of media violence; participants tended to show less sympathy toward victims and greater enjoyment of the violent scenes. This is evidence about repeated viewing of movie scenes, not a video-game experiment. Read the study abstract.

Repeated game play: a narrower response involving guilt
A 2017 longitudinal experiment found that repeated play reduced a game’s ability to elicit guilt, which the authors described as evidence of emotional desensitization concerning later game-play experiences. That result is relevant to how a player may feel during subsequent play, but guilt in a game is not a general measure of empathy or conduct outside it. Read the study.
Children’s reported exposure: an association, not proof of cause
Funk and colleagues’ 2004 study collected measures from 150 fourth- and fifth-grade students. Reported exposure to violent video games was associated with lower empathy; exposure to violence in both games and movies was associated with stronger pro-violence attitudes. The authors said their study did not investigate causality. They also noted that the sample’s relatively low exposure to real-life violence could limit interpretation. These findings describe associations in that age group, not proof that playing violent games caused lower empathy. Read the study.

Reviews and physiological response
A 2017 paper reviewing the American Psychological Association task force assessment summarized associations between violent-game exposure and outcomes including increased desensitization and decreased empathy. A 2021 review concluded that exposure increases desensitization risk, with a focus on children and adolescents. These are review-level conclusions, and should not be read as proof of an inevitable effect on every player. Read the 2017 review; read the 2021 review.
A 2006 experiment examined physiological desensitization to real-life violence after game exposure. Its introduction noted that little research had experimentally examined that specific outcome. It therefore does not settle whether a reduced response to fictional game violence transfers to responses to real-life violence. Read the study.

Why these findings are not interchangeable
“Less impact” can refer to different things: sympathy for a fictional victim, guilt during play, an empathy measure, attitudes toward violence, or a physiological response. Evidence for one outcome does not automatically establish another. The studies also differ in whether they examine movies or games, repeated viewing or repeated play, and immediate responses or later measures.
- Repeated exposure experiments can show a change in the measured response under the study conditions. The movie-scenes study concerns short-term responses; the game experiment concerns guilt during later play.
- Correlational findings, such as the study of schoolchildren’s reported exposure and empathy, show that two measures are associated. They do not establish which came first or whether exposure caused the difference.
- Fictional-media responses are not the same measurement as responses to real-life violence. A study focused on physiological response to real-life violence raises that distinct question but does not make the evidence conclusive.
What a muted reaction does—and does not—mean
Feeling less shocked by a scene seen many times can be consistent with habituation. On its own, that feeling cannot diagnose a lasting change in empathy, indicate moral approval of violence, or predict real-world behavior. The available findings do not establish that all players respond alike, and they do not justify treating a player’s reaction to game gore as a measure of how they would respond to real harm.
