If you want the classic RuneScape feel, start with Old School RuneScape (OSRS). If you’re curious about the larger modern game, its broader set of skills, or a choice of combat interfaces, try RuneScape—often called RuneScape 3 by players. Neither is an objective upgrade over the other; the right choice depends on which experience you want to return to. Your old character’s progress does not carry over to OSRS.
What is the difference between OSRS and RuneScape?
They are separate games, not two modes that share one character. Jagex says OSRS launched in 2013 from a 2007 backup and requires players to start a character from scratch. So if your old character is in modern RuneScape, you will not bring its levels or progress into OSRS. Jagex Support explains the relationship between the games.
OSRS preserves a classic presentation, but it is not a frozen copy of the 2007 game. Jagex describes it as an evolving game, with major changes shaped by player voting. Jagex’s franchise overview outlines that approach.

What carries over from your old account?
Your progress does not transfer from RuneScape into OSRS: Jagex says OSRS characters start from scratch. Treat choosing OSRS as beginning a new character in a separate game, not switching your existing character to an older version. The two games’ distinct identities are also described in Jagex’s support article.
How should you decide without overcommitting?
- Pick the game whose feel sounds appealing. For classic-era nostalgia, start with OSRS; for the modern game’s scale and interface choices, start with RuneScape.
- Try its free entry point. Jagex provides official welcome or join pages for OSRS and RuneScape.
- Consider membership only after you know you want more content. See the current details on the official OSRS membership and RuneScape membership pages before buying.
Membership expands content in both games, but the official information cited here does not establish exact current prices or that one subscription works identically across both. Check the terms for the game you choose rather than assuming a purchase covers both.
