For Halo 3 on PC, start by matching MCC’s in-game resolution to your display’s selected resolution. Open Options and Career → Settings → Video, choose the matching resolution, save, and restart the game. Halo Support says properly configured display settings can reduce issues such as tearing or stuttering, but it does not prescribe a universal FPS-boosting preset for custom games.
Set the game resolution to match your display
- In Windows, check the active resolution under Settings → System → Display.
- In MCC, open Options and Career → Settings → Video and select that same resolution.
- Save the change and restart MCC.
This is Halo Support’s recommended starting point for display problems, including tearing or stuttering. It is not a guarantee of higher frame rates. If performance still falls short, you can test a lower rendering resolution as a tradeoff: it may reduce rendering workload, but image detail will also decrease. Change only one setting at a time and compare the same map and situation on your PC. Halo Support’s display-settings instructions explain the matching-resolution procedure.
Test MCC’s frame limit and upscaling controls
The July 2023 MCC update documents a Framerate Limit control under Video Settings and FidelityFX Super Resolution under Experimental Settings. Menu placement may have changed in later versions, so check the current client if those labels are elsewhere. The update does not identify an optimal cap or FSR mode for Halo 3 custom games, nor does it quantify an FPS gain. Treat them as options to test against your own priorities: stable frame delivery, display behavior, and image clarity. The July 2023 update notes document these locations.
- Test one Framerate Limit value at a time and compare whether frame delivery feels steadier in the same gameplay situation.
- Try FidelityFX Super Resolution only if available in the current client; compare its image clarity and frame behavior with your usual setting.
- Keep notes on the map, display resolution, and setting changes so that a difference is not confused with a different gameplay situation.
Avoid a dual-monitor windowed-mode resolution issue
Halo’s July 2023 update notes a graphical distortion issue that can occur when changing resolution in windowed mode on a two-monitor PC while one monitor is disabled. The listed workaround is to use Fullscreen. If you encounter distortion in that configuration, enable the second monitor or switch to Fullscreen before changing resolution.

Use minimum requirements as a baseline, not an FPS promise
Halo Support lists these minimum requirements for Halo 3 in MCC: Windows 10; an Intel Core i7-975 or AMD A12-9800 APU; a GeForce GTS 450 or Radeon R7 Graphics; DirectX 11 (with Direct3D feature level 11.1 noted); and 55 GB of storage. These are minimum specifications, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate in a custom game. The hardware page also says MCC has no officially recommended drivers and advises using the recommended Halo Infinite drivers or newer; that is general MCC guidance, not a Halo 3 performance guarantee. Steam’s Halo 3 listing describes support up to 4K UHD and 60+ FPS, and lists 30 FPS at 1920×1080 on performance settings for the minimum requirement. These are store-published capability and minimum-target statements, not benchmark results for every PC or custom lobby. Steam’s Halo 3 listing provides that context.

Choose settings by comparing the result on your PC
There is no source-backed universal best setting for Halo 3 custom games. The right choice depends on your PC, display resolution, the custom-game situation, and whether you prioritize stable frame behavior or image detail. Start with the display-resolution match, then change one control at a time and judge the result in a repeatable scenario rather than assuming that a particular cap, resolution, or FSR option will help every setup.
