Before you pre-order an anime figure, check the seller’s payment schedule, cancellation rules, delay policy, and shipping terms for your specific item and destination. There is no universal deposit or cancellation rule: a preorder may be charged at checkout or later, and a release-date change may not let you cancel. Customs charges can also be due after checkout.
Before you place an anime figure preorder
Treat a preorder as a commitment, not a reservation you can always cancel without cost. Terms can differ by retailer, region, payment method, product, and order status. Before submitting payment, find the answers to these questions on the product page, checkout screen, and seller policy:
- When will you be charged, and is any upfront payment required?
- By what date or order stage can you request cancellation, and does the seller guarantee acceptance?
- What happens if the release estimate changes or the seller cannot ship on time?
- What are the shipping cost, method, tracking, and dispatch schedule?
- Are import duties, taxes, or carrier handling charges collected separately?
- Can you change the delivery address, and what is the cutoff?
Save the product listing, checkout terms, order confirmation, payment record, and seller notices. If a date or term matters to you, keep a copy that shows what applied when you ordered.
Do you have to pay a deposit?
No single deposit rule applies to anime figure preorders. Payment timing can depend on the store, payment method, and order. Good Smile Company’s terms distinguish payment methods and orders; its Japanese commercial transaction notice lists some methods charged at order and others at shipment. Neither source establishes a universal deposit percentage. Check the exact checkout terms instead of assuming you will pay a deposit, the full amount, or nothing until dispatch. Can you cancel an anime figure preorder?
Possibly, but the seller’s policy and your order’s status determine whether a request is eligible—and a request may not guarantee cancellation. Read the cancellation policy before ordering, including any exclusions for orders already being processed, shipped, or otherwise advanced.
Good Smile Company
Good Smile Company says cancellation eligibility may depend on the item and order status, and some orders may not be cancellable even during the preorder period. AmiAmi
AmiAmi says customers may submit a preorder cancellation request up to release, but it may not accept every request. Its policy also excludes some order states and warns that misuse or excessive cancellation requests can lead to account restrictions. Read AmiAmi’s current FAQ and policy for the rules that apply to your order.
A separate AmiAmi notice dated August 29, 2025, addressed US-bound orders on hold and described customer-requested cancellation and refund options for paid but unshipped orders. It also said processor fees and currency-exchange differences might not be reimbursed. What if the figure preorder is delayed?
A revised release estimate does not automatically give every buyer the same cancellation right. Check the retailer’s terms for your region and distinguish a manufacturer or release-date change from a seller’s failure to ship within its stated timeframe.
Retailer examples
Good Smile Company’s Japanese terms say that a change in release timing does not permit cancellation for that store. Crunchyroll’s EU FAQ says release dates or availability may change and that an order cannot be cancelled after it has shipped or is being prepared for shipping. For buyers in the United States
The Federal Trade Commission’s Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule generally requires a seller to ship within the timeframe stated in its offer or advertisement. If no timeframe is stated, the default is 30 days. If the seller cannot ship on time, it generally must notify you and give you the choice to accept the delay or cancel for a full refund. The checkout total may not be the final amount you pay. Good Smile Company says its stated product and shipping charges do not include customs duties or import taxes, which vary by destination and shipment contents and cannot be estimated by the store. Depending on the destination and shipping arrangement, the carrier or customs authority may collect charges separately. Good Smile Company also explains that customs origin is based on where the product was manufactured, not simply the country from which it ships. Its US-territory notice, dated May 22, 2025, says customers are responsible for applicable duties, import taxes, and handling charges, and warns that government customs measures can change. Separate releases may mean separate shipments
Do not assume that figures ordered together will ship together. Good Smile Company says international preorder items ship separately according to their individual release schedules and that combined shipping is unavailable. A staggered release can therefore mean separate dispatches rather than one consolidated parcel. Check the specific seller’s policy before calculating shipping costs. Check the address and delivery details
Compare the delivery estimate, shipping method, tracking, and any address-change cutoff before ordering. Good Smile Company says it is not liable for failed delivery caused by errors in the address supplied by the customer. A quick way to compare retailers
If you are choosing between stores, compare the same terms for the same figure and destination. A lower displayed price may not be the lower delivered cost if shipping, separate parcels, or import charges differ.

Official policy examples establish that these terms can differ; they do not establish a definitive ranking of figure retailers. Use the policy for your seller, destination, and order rather than assuming one store’s terms apply elsewhere.

- Check the order stage. Open the confirmation and current order page to see whether the item is still a preorder, being prepared, or shipped; cancellation rules may change at each stage.
- Contact the retailer in writing. State the order number and ask directly about cancellation, delay options, refund timing, or an address correction. Save the reply and any notices.
- Keep payment and delivery records. Save receipts, tracking details, and relevant policy terms. If the seller does not resolve a dispute, use the consumer-protection or payment-dispute process available in your jurisdiction.
- Use local guidance for legal rights. The FTC guidance above applies to US orders. Buyers elsewhere should consult their own consumer authority rather than assuming the US rule governs.
