Use the opening hours to learn timing and positioning, check Mable’s Research menu for unclaimed rewards, and take advantage of Lumiose City’s travel options. These tips are based on Nintendo’s official guide to the game.
What is different about Pokémon Legends: Z-A?
Pokémon Legends: Z-A takes place in Lumiose City. Nintendo describes it as the first Pokémon RPG in which both the Trainer and Pokémon move during real-time battles; there are no turns. You command your Pokémon to use moves, so timing, move range and area of effect, and switching between Pokémon all matter. If you are used to turn-based battles, give yourself time to learn how attacks and movement work together rather than relying on the old rhythm of selecting a move and waiting for a turn to resolve. Nintendo’s game announcement explains the real-time system.
How should you choose a starter?
Your first partner options are Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile. Nintendo’s announcement lists these choices but does not rank their early-game strength or identify one as easiest for beginners. Pick the one you like best; there is no source-backed “best beginner starter” among these three. Nintendo’s announcement also describes the setting and other game features.
Which menus and rewards should you check?

After speaking with Mable in the Pokémon Research Lab, complete research requirements to earn TMs. The rewards are not added automatically: open the main menu and redeem them. Make checking the menu part of your routine so a completed task does not leave a reward waiting to be claimed.

Use menus to adapt your team
Outside battle, you can change team members from Boxes, change moves—including moves a Pokémon has just learned—and evolve Pokémon. You can also use healing items during battle. Treat your team as something you can adjust as you go rather than a fixed lineup you must stick with. Nintendo covers these options in its 12 tips and tricks for Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

Check the symbols shown for a move to get a quick indication of its effect against the target:

These cues help you compare available moves at a glance; in real-time battles, you still need to consider timing and where the attack will land. Nintendo explains the symbols in its official tips.
How can you use stealth, movement, and recall in battle?
Approach carefully
Crouch or hide when approaching wild Pokémon or Trainers if you want to avoid being noticed and gain an advantage. Stealth is a useful option, not a requirement to use in every encounter.

Pay attention to movement built into moves
Some moves carry the Pokémon forward. That movement can help evade an attack or get into a better position, but it can also send your Pokémon somewhere you did not intend. Consider where the move will take it before using it.
Recall a Pokémon to avoid a major attack
If you time it correctly, recalling your Pokémon can keep it safe in its Poké Ball when an attack goes off. Be aware that the attack may hit you instead. Nintendo’s official beginner tips cover stealth, movement, and recall timing.

How do you get around Lumiose City?
As you explore, register Pokémon Centers as fast-travel locations on the map. Taxis can take you to places you have not visited yet, which can be useful when you need to cross the city. These options serve different needs: registering a Center gives you a destination to return to, while a taxi can help you reach new areas.
How should you approach the Z-A Royale?
The Z-A Royale competition takes place in a battle zone at night. Nintendo’s advice is to use the day to catch and train Pokémon before taking part. You do not have to earn all the ticket points in one night: progress can accumulate over multiple nights. That gives you room to prepare at your own pace rather than treating every night as an all-or-nothing attempt. See Nintendo’s tips for its guidance on the Royale.

Which version can you play?
Nintendo lists Pokémon Legends: Z-A for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. The Switch 2 Edition is described as having enhanced resolution and frame rates. Check Nintendo’s UK product listing for those edition details; availability, online-play requirements, and other regional product information can vary, so consult the listing for your region before purchasing.
