If a download page is sending fake virus alerts, close or leave it without clicking its warning, report the page through your browser or the appropriate Google form, then block that site’s notification permission. A browser notification alone does not prove your device is infected. If you downloaded or ran a file, handle that separately.
Why am I getting fake virus alerts from my browser?
A website you allowed to send notifications can deliver messages through the browser, including when its tab is no longer open. Those alerts can imitate virus warnings or system messages; they are not, by themselves, evidence that malware was installed. Microsoft distinguishes website notifications from pop-up windows in its Edge notification guidance. Chrome and Firefox also let you manage site notification permissions in their settings (Chrome; Firefox).
Do not call a number displayed in a warning or install a scanner offered by the page. Microsoft Support says: “Error and warning messages from Microsoft never include a phone number.” A page claiming otherwise may be trying to sell fake support or obtain access to your device.
How do I report the suspicious download page?
- Stop interacting with the page. Do not click its warning, download buttons, or offers to install security software. Close the tab if you can do so safely.
- Copy the page address without reopening it. If needed, use the existing tab or browser history. Do not include passwords, payment details, or other personal information in a report. Google’s spam-report guidance warns that submitted information may be sent to the site owner and that personally identifying information can cause a submission to be discarded; that warning applies to Google’s report form, not necessarily to other reporting channels.
- Choose a report route that matches the problem. For a page distributing malware, Google Search Central links to a malware report form. For a page impersonating a service to steal personal information, use Google’s phishing report form. Firefox can report the page currently open using Help > Report deceptive site. In Edge, use Settings and more > Help and feedback > Report unsafe website. These routes submit reports; they do not guarantee immediate removal of the page or revoke its notification permission.
How do I stop notifications from a download site?
Use the browser where the notifications appear. Menu wording can vary as browsers change, but the controls below are for desktop Chrome, Edge, and Firefox.

Blocking a notification permission stops that site from sending browser notifications under that permission. It does not remove a downloaded file or undo anything a program has already done.
What if I downloaded a file or ran it?
If the file was downloaded but not opened
Do not open it. In Firefox, an unsafe download shown in the Downloads panel can be opened for details and removed with Remove file. Do not select Allow download to bypass the warning unless you have independently verified both the source and the file. For other browsers, use their download list to locate and delete the file; do not treat clearing the site’s notification permission as file cleanup.

If you ran the file or suspect the device was compromised
For Windows, Microsoft recommends running a full scan with Windows Security and applying security updates. If you may have entered credentials on the page, change the affected passwords. A scan is a useful response, not proof that a device is clean.
If you gave a suspected scammer remote access or payment information, Microsoft advises considering a device reset in serious cases and contacting your card provider about charges. Treat financial details or remote access as a separate urgent concern from browser notifications.

What does a report accomplish?
A report gives the browser or service provider information to assess a page; it is not an immediate takedown mechanism. Reporting also does not block notifications on your device. Complete both steps—report the URL and revoke its permission—if the site has been sending alerts.
