Nintendo Switch Sports Resort should ditch the original game’s time-limited online Collections—and the customization FOMO they created. The sequel appears to make earning customization points more inclusive by rewarding play in any mode, including offline play. Nintendo has not yet confirmed whether its items will rotate or expire, though, so it is too soon to say the FOMO problem is gone.
What should Nintendo Switch Sports Resort ditch?
It should ditch the original Nintendo Switch Sports’ time-limited online Collections. In the account published by Nintendo Everything, Collections offered sets of 12 exclusive items that rotated weekly, with each set available for three weeks before it could return in a later rotation. The article’s criticism is that this made customization feel like a deadline: players had to keep up with online rotations or risk waiting for an item to come back.
The same article says local play did not earn points toward items. That is the article’s account of the original game’s reward system, not a Nintendo-confirmed explanation of the system’s design intent. The underlying concern is straightforward: customization should not depend on logging in during a limited window, especially when playing locally cannot advance those rewards.
What Nintendo has announced for the sequel
Nintendo lists Nintendo Switch Sports Resort as a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive scheduled for October 22, 2026. The game is announced with 12 sports, character creation or customization for Sportsmates and Miis, and both online and offline play. Nintendo’s US product page says one to four players can play on one system; details about online player counts are still forthcoming. Online features require a Nintendo Switch Online membership. More directly relevant to rewards, Nintendo said on September 10 that playing any sport in any mode earns Spocco Points, which players can exchange for character customizations. The update also describes an offline Island Crown mode. That is a meaningful change from the complaint about local play in the original: offline play is included among the ways to earn points. Nintendo’s September 10 update
Does that mean the sequel has fixed the FOMO?
Not necessarily. Nintendo’s announcement addresses how players can earn points; it does not establish how long the resulting customizations remain available. The cited official information does not say whether items will rotate, whether rewards will expire, or whether every customization will be obtainable at any time.

Those are separate questions. Letting offline play earn points broadens access to progression. Removing timed availability would prevent a player from missing a specific reward because they were not playing during its window. Nintendo has confirmed the first improvement, but not the second.

What the sequel should get right
The best version of Resort’s reward system would let players make progress through the way they prefer to play and give them a fair chance to collect customizations without watching a calendar. Nintendo’s any-mode points announcement is a promising start for players who prefer offline play. Whether the sequel also avoids rotating or expiring rewards remains unknown until Nintendo confirms how item availability works.
