For PC VR, the best controller choice usually starts with the headset you already own: use PS VR2 Sense controllers with PS VR2’s official PC Adapter route, connect Quest 3 to SteamVR through Steam Link, or choose Valve Index Controllers if you have—or plan to build around—a SteamVR Tracking setup. These options are not interchangeable: they differ in connection method, tracking hardware, setup requirements, and which features carry over to PC.

Compatibility depends on the whole setup, not just the controller. Before choosing, check the headset connection path, required tracking hardware, and the controller bindings available in the games you intend to play.
PS VR2 Sense controllers on PC
What the setup requires
Sony’s official PC route uses the PS VR2 PC Adapter and requires a Windows PC, Steam, SteamVR, and the PlayStation VR2 App. The headset connects to the adapter with a DisplayPort 1.4 cable, and Sony instructs users to connect the adapter directly to a USB 3.0 port rather than through a hub or extension cable. The Sense controllers pair with the computer over Bluetooth. Sony warns that not all Bluetooth adapters function properly. Sony’s 2024 announcement specified a minimum of 8 GB RAM, an Intel Core i5-7600 or AMD Ryzen 3 3100 (Zen 2 or later), a compatible graphics card, DisplayPort 1.4, direct USB, and Bluetooth 4.0 or later. It recommended an RTX 3060 or later or Radeon RX 6600 XT or later for best performance. Requirements can change as hardware and drivers evolve, so check Sony’s PC support announcement and current setup guidance before buying or connecting equipment.

What does—and does not—carry over
Sony says PC use retains features including 4K visuals (2000 × 2040 per eye), a 110-degree field of view, finger touch detection, see-through view, and 3D Audio in supported games. These are manufacturer-stated capabilities, not independent comparative measurements. Sony also says foveated rendering is available without eye tracking.
Some PS5 features are not available when playing on PC: HDR, headset feedback, eye tracking, adaptive triggers, and haptic feedback beyond rumble. The Sense controllers therefore do not offer the full PS5 feature set in PC VR. Sony’s tested Bluetooth adapter list notes that testing was conducted on 2024-07-20 and does not guarantee operation; verify compatibility and drivers rather than assuming a particular adapter will work.

Adapter price context
Sony announced an estimated launch retail price of $59.99 / €59.99 / £49.99 for the PC Adapter in 2024. That is a historical launch estimate, not a statement of current price or availability. Check current retailers and regional stock before purchase.
Quest 3 controllers for SteamVR
Valve’s Steam Link support page lists Meta Quest 3 as a supported headset. The stated PC requirements are Steam and SteamVR running on the computer; install Steam Link on the headset and follow its on-screen connection instructions. This establishes an official SteamVR path for Quest 3, but does not by itself establish comparative controller tracking precision, latency, battery life, or feature parity with other options.

For Quest 3 owners, the practical starting point is therefore the headset’s supported Steam Link route and the controllers bundled with their headset. Confirm that the games you want to play have suitable bindings for the controllers. Valve’s support instructions are at Steam Link for Meta, HTC and PICO headsets.
Valve Index Controllers and SteamVR Tracking
Valve Index Controllers are designed for a SteamVR Tracking setup, not as a simple controller swap for any inside-out tracked headset. Valve lists compatible headsets featuring SteamVR Tracking, including Valve Index and HTC Vive and Vive Pro headsets, and specifies compatible SteamVR-tracking base stations as a requirement. That makes Index Controllers a plausible choice when you already own the compatible headset and base stations, or when you intentionally want to build around SteamVR Tracking. If you have only a Quest 3 or PS VR2, Valve’s official compatibility information does not describe Index Controllers as a direct, universal pairing option. Mixed tracking arrangements may involve additional third-party setup and are outside the official compatibility path described here.

SteamVR input bindings can help games support different controller types: Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes suggested bindings and rebinding across controller types. This is a software accommodation, not a promise that every title supports every controller equally or exposes the same features. Review a game’s controller support and available SteamVR bindings before assuming its controls will map cleanly. Valve explains the system in its SteamVR application settings documentation.

Which PC VR controller option should you choose?
- Choose PS VR2 Sense if you own PS VR2 and want Sony’s supported PC Adapter path, and you are comfortable with the stated PC feature omissions.
- Use Quest 3’s bundled controllers if you own Quest 3 and want to connect to SteamVR through the supported Steam Link route.
- Consider Valve Index Controllers if your setup already has a SteamVR Tracking-compatible headset and base stations, or you are choosing that ecosystem on purpose.
- Check game-specific bindings whichever route you choose; headset compatibility alone does not guarantee identical controls in every game.
