Its rebuilt visuals, rearranged music, and quality-of-life changes make returning to Koholint worthwhile; its optional Chamber Dungeons add a side activity rather than a second campaign.
What feels different on Switch?
Nintendo describes the Switch release as a reimagining of the classic adventure. It updates the presentation and makes some familiar tasks more convenient, while keeping the island, story, and dungeon journey at the center. Nintendo’s product listing highlights these changes.
- Rebuilt visuals and rearranged music: The world and soundtrack have been refreshed for the remake. TIME reviewer Matthew Gault described the Switch music as orchestral compared with the Game Boy original’s limited sound, and praised the graphics and sound as more than a rough transfer. That is a reviewer’s impression, not an objective audio measurement. TIME’s 2019 review offers the contemporary assessment.
- More convenient item use: You can equip more items at once, reducing the need to repeatedly swap gear.

Is the adventure itself new?
No. The core appeal remains exploring Koholint Island, finding items, solving dungeons, and collecting the instruments tied to the Wind Fish. TIME identifies the Switch game as a remake of Nintendo’s 1993 Game Boy adventure; its unusual setting and Nintendo-character references are part of what gives the journey its distinct character. If you played the original, expect a familiar route and central story in a newly presented form, not a major new main-story chapter.
What does Chamber Dungeons add?
Chamber Dungeons is an optional activity built around rearranging rooms from dungeons into objective-based layouts. Nintendo says you can earn Chamber Stones through the main adventure’s dungeons and mini-games, then use the stones to arrange Chambers on grids. Zelda-character amiibo can unlock Chambers exclusive to amiibo; amiibo are not required for the main adventure or for earning Chamber Stones in-game. The mode gives returning players a way to remix familiar rooms, but it should not be mistaken for a substantial extra campaign. In TIME’s 2019 review, Gault characterized it as a remix of content players had already completed and noted that it was optional.
How should the 2019 performance report affect your decision?
TIME’s reviewer reported frequent overworld slowdown and stutter during the 2019 review, including in Goponga Swamp, in both handheld and docked play. That is a dated account of the reviewer’s experience, not a verified description of performance on every current setup. Nintendo’s current listing confirms Switch 2 compatibility and a free update with improved visuals and HDR support, but it does not give a current frame-rate measurement or state that the stutter described in 2019 has been fixed. Who should play the Switch version?
- Play it if you want to experience Koholint again with updated visuals, rearranged music, and more convenient item and map handling.
- Consider the original if the Game Boy-era presentation is part of what you want from the experience.
- Temper expectations if you are looking for a new story or a large amount of new main-game content; the Switch release’s main adventure is familiar, and Chamber Dungeons is optional.
Nintendo lists the Switch release date as September 20, 2019. Its product listing also confirms Switch 2 compatibility and the free visual and HDR update. The listing does not state a current price, so whether it is good value at a particular price depends on the offer available where you shop.
