Xbox recommends at least 20 Mbps for a stable connection, but that is guidance—not a guarantee of smooth play. A paid subscription is not required for every title: supported free-to-play games, including Fortnite, can be played with a free Microsoft account. Check current plan terms before subscribing, because Xbox has announced cloud-gaming changes for November 2026.
Do you need Game Pass Ultimate?
Not for every game. Xbox says supported free-to-play games such as Fortnite can be streamed with a free Microsoft account. Other games require the entitlement specified for that title, which may involve a Game Pass plan or access to an eligible owned game. Xbox advertises cloud access to hundreds of games through Game Pass, but the catalog and cloud features are not identical across every tier. Check the game’s listing and the current terms at Xbox Cloud Gaming before choosing a plan.
There is also a planned change to consider: Xbox announced that subscription-based cloud gaming terms are due to change in November 2026. The announcement describes monthly cloud-hour allowances by plan and an option to buy cloud playtime through the Xbox Store to stream eligible owned games. As of October 4, 2026, those changes are upcoming, not a verified post-rollout policy; confirm live terms after implementation rather than relying on old allowance or price figures. Can you play without an Xbox console?
Yes. A dedicated Xbox console is not necessary if you have another supported device, a compatible way to access the service, internet, and the right game entitlement. Xbox lists Windows PCs, Apple and Android phones and tablets, Xbox consoles, selected LG, Samsung, and VIDAA OS televisions, Amazon Fire TV devices, selected Meta Quest headsets, and other supported devices. “Selected” matters: the full category does not mean every model or operating-system version works. Check the live Xbox device information for your exact model.

Which devices, browsers, and regions work?
On xbox.com, Xbox names Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and Safari as supported browser examples. Xbox Wire says cloud streaming on Android, macOS, iOS, iPadOS, and ChromeOS works through a browser. App or browser availability can differ by device, and device support does not by itself establish service availability in every country. How fast does your internet need to be?
Xbox Wire recommends an internet connection of at least 20 Mbps for stable cloud gaming. That is Xbox’s published recommendation in its December 19, 2025 guide, not a measured test result or a promise of a particular resolution, low input delay, or uninterrupted session. Xbox also emphasizes connection stability. A speed reading alone cannot establish that a connection will perform well throughout a game.

When checking your setup, compare your measured connection with that 20 Mbps recommendation and consider whether the connection remains stable while you play. If your setup meets the recommendation but streaming still struggles, the number alone cannot identify the cause; confirm your device, region, and game entitlement as well.

A controller is useful for many games, but it is not universal equipment. Xbox Wire says Xbox and third-party controllers are supported, naming 8BitDo, GameSir, Backbone, and Sony DualSense as examples. Some mobile games provide touch controls, and select games support mouse and keyboard. Check the input options for the specific game and device before deciding what to use; controller pairing methods also vary by device. Check your setup before you start
- Confirm the game’s access requirements. Check whether it is a supported free-to-play title or requires a particular subscription or eligible owned-game access.
- Check current plan terms. Cloud access, catalogs, and playtime can vary by plan; recheck terms after the announced November 2026 changes take effect.
- Verify your exact device and region. Use Xbox’s current device and availability information rather than assuming every TV, phone, or operating-system version is supported.
- Choose the supported access method. Use an Xbox-listed app or browser for your device; supported browser examples on xbox.com include Edge, Chrome, and Safari.
- Check your connection and input. Xbox recommends at least 20 Mbps, and your game may call for a controller, touch controls, or select mouse-and-keyboard support.
