What did you like about Link’s Awakening?
The Switch version reimagines the 1993 Koholint Island adventure. Nintendo highlights dungeons, puzzles, a map and conversation-review features, mini-games, and Chamber Dungeons built from chambers found during the adventure. It also lets Link equip more items at once. Those ingredients point to different follow-ups depending on what you want to carry forward: puzzles and regional exploration, a sequence of dungeons, or simply the freedom to discover a much larger world. Choose Echoes of Wisdom for puzzles and exploration with Zelda as the hero
The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is the natural first pick if you want another adventure centered on exploring regions, solving puzzles, and fighting enemies—but with a different protagonist. Princess Zelda is the playable hero. Nintendo lists it as a single-player Nintendo Switch release dated September 26, 2024, and its US store listing includes a physical edition. It is a separate adventure, not a Link’s Awakening sequel. The official description does not establish that the two games share the same structure or length. See Nintendo’s Echoes of Wisdom listing.
Choose Skyward Sword HD for a more structured, dungeon-led adventure
If the dungeons and puzzles were the best part of Link’s Awakening, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD is the clearest fit among these choices. Nintendo emphasizes puzzle-filled dungeons, items that open up further areas, and sword practice. Its Switch version also features motion controls. That makes it a more structured option than the open exploration of the two newer Hyrule adventures.

Nintendo lists the Switch release date as July 16, 2021, and supports TV, handheld, and tabletop modes. The store listing identifies first- and third-person play and offers a physical edition. Nintendo cautions that software compatibility and experience may differ on Switch Lite. Check Nintendo’s Skyward Sword HD listing for the local product details.
Choose Breath of the Wild for a dramatic change in scale
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the pick if you want to move from a compact island adventure to player-directed exploration across Hyrule. Rather than choosing it because it is the closest match, choose it because you want more freedom to decide where to go and what to discover. Nintendo lists it as a Nintendo Switch game and offers an Explorer’s Guide download from its product listing. See Nintendo’s Breath of the Wild listing.

Choose Tears of the Kingdom for open exploration and creative building
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom builds on the open-world direction of Breath of the Wild, adding exploration in the sky and creative tools. Nintendo describes Ultrahand and Fuse as abilities for creating weapons and ways to travel. The game released for Switch on May 12, 2023, and Nintendo lists a physical edition. Nintendo identifies it as the sequel to Breath of the Wild. Playing Breath of the Wild first is a sensible order if you care about the story and continuity, though Nintendo’s product page does not state it as a requirement.

Do you need more content from Link’s Awakening first?
Nintendo says tapping a Zelda-character amiibo can unlock Chambers exclusive to amiibo in Link’s Awakening. This is optional and not needed to play any of the recommended games. Nintendo lists a Link (Link’s Awakening) amiibo, but availability and compatibility should be checked in your local store. See Nintendo’s amiibo listing.
Which one should you start with?
- Want puzzles and exploration, but a new perspective? Start with Echoes of Wisdom.
- Want dungeons and item progression? Choose Skyward Sword HD.
- Want the biggest change of pace? Start with Breath of the Wild.
- Want open-world exploration plus construction tools? Play Breath of the Wild first if continuity matters, then move to Tears of the Kingdom.
