A reference to all nine numbered Pokémon generations, with each region’s Grass, Fire, and Water starters and notable game features.

There are nine numbered Pokémon generations, from Kanto in Generation I to Paldea in Generation IX. Each is a game-era grouping associated with a region and a Grass-, Fire-, and Water-type first-partner trio. Remakes and later returns to an older region do not, by themselves, add a new numbered generation.

Pokémon generations compared at a glance

The starter trios below are a reference collation of the standard mainline game rosters; The Pokémon Company’s cited pages do not publish one authoritative table listing all nine trios. Region names and cited features are drawn from official Pokémon materials.

Generation Region First-partner trio Useful comparison
I Kanto Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle Original numbered-era region; later revisited in Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!.
II Johto Chikorita, Cyndaquil, Totodile Gold and Silver added held items, a real-time clock and events, Pokémon genders, 100 Pokémon, and Steel and Dark types. The Pokémon Company’s Gold and Silver overview.
III Hoenn Treecko, Torchic, Mudkip Ruby and Sapphire introduced double battles, Abilities, Natures, and Contests; Hoenn was the first region to offer Contests. Ruby and Sapphire overview; Hoenn retrospective.
IV Sinnoh Turtwig, Chimchar, Piplup Regional landmarks include Mount Coronet, the Great Marsh, and Old Chateau. Official region-map article.
V Unova Snivy, Tepig, Oshawott Landmarks highlighted by the official map article include Skyarrow Bridge, Pokéstar Studios, and N’s Castle. Official region-map article.
VI Kalos Chespin, Fennekin, Froakie Notable locations include the Poké Ball Factory, Parfum Palace, and Lumiose City. Official region-map article.
VII Alola Rowlet, Litten, Popplio The region features island locations and trials; official material also highlights Team Skull and Aether Paradise. Official region-map article.
VIII Galar Grookey, Scorbunny, Sobble Sword and Shield feature the Wild Area, Dynamax and Gigantamax, and cooperative Max Raid Battles. Sword and Shield overview.
IX Paldea Sprigatito, Fuecoco, Quaxly Scarlet and Violet are described as the series’ first open-world entries, with three story goals: Champion, Titan Pokémon, and Team Star. Pokémon Parents overview.

What are the Pokémon generations?

A generation is a numbered era of mainline Pokémon games, not simply a new version number for every release. The usual shorthand pairs each generation with its introduced region: Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, Kalos, Alola, Galar, and Paldea. The Pokémon Company’s region-map article presents all nine regions in that sequence: Pokémon region maps.

A remake, enhanced edition, or return to a familiar setting is not automatically the next generation. Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! revisit Kanto and use a Pokémon GO-influenced catching mechanic, while offering Pikachu or Eevee as the partner choice rather than the original trio. The official Let’s Go page describes those distinctions.

This comparison stops at Generation IX. Hisui, the setting associated with the later prequel entry Pokémon Legends: Arceus, is not an additional numbered generation in this nine-generation sequence.

How do the starter choices compare?

Across the familiar generation-opening choice, players select a Grass-, Fire-, or Water-type partner. The pattern is a useful way to compare trios, but it does not establish that one starter is objectively easiest or strongest; that depends on the particular game and a player’s preferences. The Pokémon Parents overview describes the general pattern, while the Let’s Go page shows that a game can vary the choice itself. Pokémon Parents overview; Let’s Go overview.

What changed across the generations?

Generation I: Kanto establishes the starting point

Kanto is the first region in the numbered sequence and begins with Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. Later, Let’s Go returned to Kanto with a different partner setup and Pokémon GO-influenced catching; that return does not change Kanto’s place in Generation I. Official Let’s Go description.

Generation II: Johto adds systems as well as Pokémon

Gold and Silver added 100 Pokémon, held items, Pokémon genders, and the Steel and Dark types. They also introduced an internal clock tied to real-time events. Together these additions expanded both what players could collect and the ways the world could respond to time. The Pokémon Company’s Gold and Silver overview.

Generation VIII: Galar features the Wild Area and Dynamax battles

In Sword and Shield, Galar’s freely explorable Wild Area sits alongside Dynamax and Gigantamax battles and cooperative Max Raid Battles. Those mechanics are specifically associated with the games’ feature set here; their inclusion does not imply that other generations lack exploration or multiplayer activities. Which Pokémon region is each generation?

The sequence is Kanto (I), Johto (II), Hoenn (III), Sinnoh (IV), Unova (V), Kalos (VI), Alola (VII), Galar (VIII), and Paldea (IX). For a visual reference, The Pokémon Company reported in 2023 that Pokémon Center offered individual region-map posters and a nine-pack covering Kanto through Paldea. That report documents the offering at the time, not current inventory. Official region-map article.
