Each is a game-era grouping associated with a region and a Grass-, Fire-, and Water-type first-partner trio. Remakes and later returns to an older region do not, by themselves, add a new numbered generation.
Pokémon generations compared at a glance
The starter trios below are a reference collation of the standard mainline game rosters; The Pokémon Company’s cited pages do not publish one authoritative table listing all nine trios. Region names and cited features are drawn from official Pokémon materials.

What are the Pokémon generations?
A generation is a numbered era of mainline Pokémon games, not simply a new version number for every release. The usual shorthand pairs each generation with its introduced region: Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, Kalos, Alola, Galar, and Paldea. The Pokémon Company’s region-map article presents all nine regions in that sequence: Pokémon region maps.
A remake, enhanced edition, or return to a familiar setting is not automatically the next generation. Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! revisit Kanto and use a Pokémon GO-influenced catching mechanic, while offering Pikachu or Eevee as the partner choice rather than the original trio. The official Let’s Go page describes those distinctions.

How do the starter choices compare?
Across the familiar generation-opening choice, players select a Grass-, Fire-, or Water-type partner. The pattern is a useful way to compare trios, but it does not establish that one starter is objectively easiest or strongest; that depends on the particular game and a player’s preferences. The Pokémon Parents overview describes the general pattern, while the Let’s Go page shows that a game can vary the choice itself. Pokémon Parents overview; Let’s Go overview.

What changed across the generations?
Generation I: Kanto establishes the starting point
Kanto is the first region in the numbered sequence and begins with Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. Later, Let’s Go returned to Kanto with a different partner setup and Pokémon GO-influenced catching; that return does not change Kanto’s place in Generation I. Official Let’s Go description.
Generation II: Johto adds systems as well as Pokémon
Gold and Silver added 100 Pokémon, held items, Pokémon genders, and the Steel and Dark types. They also introduced an internal clock tied to real-time events. Together these additions expanded both what players could collect and the ways the world could respond to time. The Pokémon Company’s Gold and Silver overview.

In Sword and Shield, Galar’s freely explorable Wild Area sits alongside Dynamax and Gigantamax battles and cooperative Max Raid Battles.
