Pokémon remakes can change a game’s presentation, systems, extras and connectivity in different combinations; the label does not mean that every part has been rebuilt. Compare those elements separately. In particular, the 2026 Switch releases of Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen are rereleases of the 2004 Game Boy Advance remakes, not new remakes of the original Red and Green.
Remake, remaster or rerelease: what do the labels mean?
Pokémon does not use “remake” and “remaster” as a formal, consistently defined taxonomy. As practical descriptions, a remake recreates an earlier adventure for a later platform or generation, often changing its presentation and selected systems. A remaster usually suggests a more limited refresh that keeps more of the original structure. A rerelease makes an existing version available again, potentially with platform-specific adaptations.
Nintendo calls FireRed and LeafGreen remakes of the first Pokémon games. Its 2026 Switch editions, by contrast, are rereleases of those 2004 Game Boy Advance remakes. Nintendo says their contents broadly match the GBA release, with connectivity adapted for built-in local wireless. Nintendo does not provide an official definition of “remaster.” Nintendo’s Switch release announcement and Nintendo Support’s FAQ describe those editions.
What parts of a Pokémon game can change?
To understand what a remake changes, compare the game across several dimensions. A familiar story does not guarantee familiar systems, visuals or connectivity, and a newer release does not necessarily add new story content.

What changed in FireRed and LeafGreen?
The 2004 Game Boy Advance remakes
Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen are remakes of the first Pokémon games, not simply the original Game Boy versions with a new label. Nintendo identifies the original 151 Pokémon and GBA-era features including abilities, natures, weather, held items and gender selection. It also describes turn-based play and a classic soundtrack. These details distinguish the 2004 remakes from the earlier releases without implying that every later Pokémon system was added.
The 2026 Nintendo Switch rereleases
The Switch versions bring the GBA remakes to a later platform, but Nintendo says their contents are broadly the same as in the original GBA release. The notable platform adaptation in Nintendo’s US information is connectivity: players can connect using built-in local wireless. Nintendo Support says online play is not supported.

Nintendo’s February 20, 2026 announcement describes the US editions as digital-only, available individually and in regional language versions. Those availability details are specific to that US release information; they should not be assumed to apply in every territory or to future platform policies.
What changed in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl?
The official Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl site describes these Switch games as remakes that faithfully reproduce the original story while adding player-friendly conveniences from modern Pokémon games and close-up battle scenes. That points to a combination of fidelity and selective modernization: the story remains the anchor, while some presentation and play conveniences differ.

The official description does not, by itself, establish a complete list of mechanical differences from the original Diamond and Pearl. Treat “faithfully reproduced” as a statement about the story, not proof that every mechanic, interface detail or other part of the experience is identical.

Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! are Switch RPGs presented as approachable to newcomers while retaining depth for veteran players. Their official site calls out connectivity with Pokémon GO and compatibility with the Poké Ball Plus accessory. Those features make platform interaction and an optional accessory part of the comparison, rather than changes that can be described only in terms of graphics or story.

The official description supports those broad points; it is not a full mechanics-by-mechanics comparison with an earlier game. For that, check the particular titles’ manuals or product information rather than assuming every remake follows the same pattern.

How to judge a remake before playing
- Check the release history. Establish whether the version is a new remake, a remaster or a rerelease. The 2026 Switch FireRed and LeafGreen are rereleases of the GBA remakes.
- Separate story from systems. A faithful story can coexist with updated conveniences or different mechanics, as the official description of Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl illustrates.
- Look at presentation and sound. Check whether the release changes the visual style, battle framing, soundtrack or interface rather than assuming a platform upgrade changed them all.
- Verify connectivity and extras for that edition. Local wireless, online play, Pokémon GO features and accessory support vary by game and platform. For example, Nintendo says Switch FireRed and LeafGreen have local wireless but no online play.
- Use title-specific official material for detailed comparisons. Broad labels and marketing descriptions are not substitutes for a mechanics list when a particular feature matters to you.
