How Steam Frame connects to a gaming PC
Valve describes Steam Frame as a standalone VR headset designed primarily for low-latency streaming of a player’s Steam library from a PC. It also supports standalone VR and non-VR experiences. In other words, wireless PC streaming is part of the intended use, while standalone play is another option. Valve Steamworks
Valve lists Wi-Fi 7 (2×2), dual radios for concurrent 5 GHz Wi-Fi and 6 GHz VR streaming, and an included Wi-Fi 6E wireless adapter for a direct low-latency PC link. Those are Valve’s product specifications; they are not independent performance measurements. Valve Steam Frame product information
Does the PC need to be wired to the router?
Valve’s general Steam Link guidance says a wired network provides the best result and recommends Ethernet when the streaming client supports it. That is advice for Remote Play generally, not a Steam Frame-specific requirement or guarantee. The official information cited here does not say Steam Frame will only stream if the PC uses Ethernet. A practical arrangement is to connect the PC to the router by Ethernet when convenient, while the headset uses its wireless connection. If the PC is already on Wi-Fi, Steam Frame is still designed for wireless streaming; actual results can depend on the local network. The router does not need to be physically connected to the headset by cable.
What to check if streaming quality is poor
- Try Ethernet for the PC host. If the PC currently uses Wi-Fi and can be connected to the router, a cable may reduce wireless traffic on that part of the local connection. Valve recommends Ethernet for the best result in its general Remote Play guidance; it does not specify a required cable category. Steam Support: Remote Play
- Prefer 5 GHz over 2.4 GHz where practical. Valve’s Steam Link guidance recommends 5 GHz rather than the more congested 2.4 GHz band. The guidance also warns that simultaneous wireless traffic can interfere with streaming. Steam Support: Remote Play
- Consider the included direct wireless adapter. Valve lists a Wi-Fi 6E adapter for a direct low-latency PC link. Check Valve’s setup instructions for how to use it; its presence does not establish a measured improvement for every room or network. Valve Steam Frame product information
These are troubleshooting considerations, not additional compatibility rules. The cited sources do not provide a measured latency figure or promise that any particular arrangement will eliminate lag.

Do you need to buy an Ethernet cable?
Only consider one if your PC currently connects to the network over Wi-Fi and you can run a cable from it to the router. Valve recommends Ethernet generally, but does not require Cat 6 or any other specific cable type for Steam Frame. If the PC is already wired, or a cable cannot reasonably reach, the recommendation does not mean you need to buy one to use the headset.
