The PlayStation App is a free mobile app; PlayStation Network (PSN) is Sony’s broader online service ecosystem. The app lets you use selected account-connected features from a compatible phone, but it is not another name for PSN.
What’s the difference between the PlayStation App and PlayStation Network?
| сравнение | PlayStation App | PlayStation Network (PSN) |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Sony’s mobile application for iOS and Android. | An online service ecosystem that connects players and provides access to PlayStation features. |
| Where you use it | On a compatible mobile device. | Across PlayStation-connected devices and online services. |
| Its role | A convenient interface for selected social, Store, capture, and remote-console functions. | The broader services and online interactions that account holders can access. |
| What it depends on | Installation, PlayStation account sign-in, and internet for connected functions; remote console features also need a paired console and the right settings. | Internet access and a PlayStation account; particular services may have additional requirements or charges. |
| Can one replace the other? | No. It uses selected features of the PlayStation ecosystem. | No. PSN is the service ecosystem, not a mobile app. |
Sony describes PSN as an online service that expands what users can do with PlayStation systems in its PS4 quick-start guide. The PlayStation App is one way to reach some of those connected features.
What can you do in the PlayStation App?
Sony’s PlayStation App support guide describes features including messaging, Store shopping, remote downloads, console storage management, captures, and launching or joining supported games. What is available depends on the device, account, console setup, and feature eligibility.
- Message and chat: Send text, stickers, voice recordings, and images, or start party voice chat.
- Shop and download: Browse the PlayStation Store, buy a game, and start its download to a paired console.
- Manage PS5 storage: Check and delete content remotely. The app does not support moving or copying games.
- View captures: Eligible PS5 screenshots and video clips can appear in the app when the feature or capture auto-upload is enabled. Sony says uploaded captures remain viewable for 14 days; video clips must be no longer than three minutes, and other restrictions apply.
- Connect to games: Notifications can let you launch or join supported console games when remote connection is set up.
Remote features need a ready console
For remote downloads, pair the app with a PS4 or PS5, connect the console to the internet, enable “Stay Connected to the Internet,” and leave the console in Rest Mode. Sony also says remote PS5 storage management is available when the console is in Rest Mode. These are console-dependent features, not functions the phone can perform by itself.

Do you need PSN to use the PlayStation App?
You need to sign in to the PlayStation App with a PlayStation account to use its account-connected features. Sony also says an account is needed for PSN. Account creation has no charge under Sony’s Australia and New Zealand terms, but some services or content may cost extra; those terms were published in 2022, so check Sony’s current terms for your region before relying on local fees or requirements.
A PlayStation account is the login identity used to access parts of the ecosystem, including the Store and online features on supported devices. The PlayStation account page explains its role. The PlayStation Store is the digital storefront, while PlayStation Plus is a separate subscription offering; neither is a synonym for the app or for PSN.

Why can’t you sign in to the PlayStation App?
A failed app sign-in does not by itself mean PSN is down. Check for a service interruption first, then look at account and device-specific causes. Sony directs users to its PlayStation Network status page for possible online-service issues; that page cannot identify every local app, account, or connection problem.
- Check service status: Look for an active PlayStation service issue on Sony’s status page.
- Verify account access: Confirm that you can sign in with the correct PlayStation account credentials and that the account is accessible.
- Check the app and internet connection: Confirm the app is installed and your phone has a working internet connection.
- For remote-console features, check setup: Confirm the console is paired and online. For remote downloads or PS5 storage management, verify the applicable Rest Mode and internet settings.
If the status page shows no service issue, the cause may still be an account-access problem, device connectivity, or a local app error. The symptoms matter, so do not assume one cause from the sign-in failure alone.
