AWS Elemental MediaLive Anywhere runs live-encoding channels on hardware at your facility, while you manage them through AWS. To set it up, plan the channel workflows, node capacity and network design first; then create networks, clusters and nodes, register each node, configure compatible inputs, and create and start a single-pipeline channel that delivers output over the public internet.

What MediaLive Anywhere does—and where it runs

MediaLive Anywhere is an on-premises deployment of AWS Elemental MediaLive. The channels run on node hardware in your organization’s facility, while AWS manages the encoding traffic and software. Your organization remains responsible for securing access to the nodes and protecting channel fidelity, logs and metrics. AWS’s Setting up AWS Elemental MediaLive Anywhere guide describes this division of responsibility.

This is a deployment for live production workflows that meet Anywhere’s input and output requirements. It is not simply the standard AWS Cloud MediaLive service moved onto local hardware: input support, channel configuration, quotas and charges differ.

Check the workflow constraints before choosing Anywhere

  • Channels are single-pipeline. Content on a second pipeline, if present, is ignored.
  • Output delivery must use the public internet. Anywhere channels cannot run on an Amazon VPC.
  • Input compatibility differs from Cloud MediaLive. Check AWS’s MediaLive Anywhere input deployment guidance for each source type before designing the workflow.
  • SDI is supported with the right node interfaces. AWS documents single-link and quad-link SDI sources when nodes have the corresponding cards. It does not identify approved node configurations or SDI card models in the setup material described here.
  • Quotas and charges are separate planning items. AWS identifies a distinct MediaLive Anywhere input quota category, and says Anywhere input, output and channel charges differ from Cloud MediaLive. Check the current AWS quota and pricing pages for applicable limits and rates; no current numeric price is established here.

Plan channel capacity and placement

List each channel’s processing and interface needs

Before provisioning, document the expected channels, encoding requirements, whether each needs SDI, and the processing power and memory those workflows require. Estimate peak simultaneous channel demand rather than sizing only for an average day. AWS’s setup guidance does not provide processor or memory minimums or an approved hardware list, so confirm node compatibility with AWS before purchasing or installing hardware.

Group channels by matching hardware requirements

Use channel placement groups to keep channels with matching hardware needs together. A cluster’s nodes share processing capabilities and physical interfaces. AWS assigns the first running channel in a placement group to an available node; later channels in that group run on that same node. Choose the cluster and placement group deliberately: AWS warns that an unsuitable choice can prevent a channel from running or overload a group for channels added later.

Decide how much backup capacity you need

Plan active nodes for peak group demand, then choose backup-node capacity according to the deployment’s resilience requirements and risk tolerance. The appropriate level depends on your own production needs; the AWS setup guidance does not prescribe a universal node count.

Plan networks before adding nodes

Work with your network engineer before creating the deployment. Identify the management, input and output traffic paths. AWS describes these as typical separate networks, but allows an organization to share networks where its traffic design permits it.

  • Identify the networks and reserve the required CIDR space for push-input addresses and output source addresses.
  • Document routes and gateways, and decide which route will be the default route.
  • Confirm that the planned paths meet the public-internet output requirement.
  • Finalize the design before associating nodes: AWS warns that a network cannot be modified after a node has been added to a cluster associated with it.

Follow the dependency order: create networks first, then clusters, then nodes. Treat the network configuration as a design decision to settle before provisioning nodes, not a setting to adjust casually after deployment.

Create and register the nodes

  1. Prepare the node hardware and operating system. The AWS node setup guide identifies RHEL 9.5 as the supported operating-system version. The guide described here does not specify approved node models, processor or memory minimums, or SDI card models; verify those details with AWS before committing to a configuration.
  2. Create the node registration script in the MediaLive console. Set the node’s permanent name, choose its Active or Backup role, and map its interfaces as planned.
  3. Run the script on its assigned node. Connect over SSH and run each script only on the node for which it was created. Run it within 24 hours of creating it.
  4. Confirm registration. Check that the node state progresses from Registering to Active. AWS estimates activation at approximately one minute; this is an operational estimate, not a guaranteed completion time.

Configure inputs and create the channel

  1. Create the inputs before the channel. Check the AWS input deployment guidance for the specific input type and confirm it is supported in Anywhere mode.
  2. For SDI, verify the physical connection and mapping. The node needs the corresponding SDI card and ports. Create SDI source records and map each source to the card and port used on each node. Match cables to the installed card, ports and signal configuration; AWS’s guidance described here does not certify a particular cable or hardware model.
  3. Create the channel with the planned placement. Select the intended cluster and channel placement group based on the capacity design. Do not select a group arbitrarily; a poor fit can stop the channel from running or leave insufficient capacity for subsequent channels.
  4. Set the channel class and output delivery. Use a single-pipeline channel and configure output delivery over the public internet. A second pipeline’s content is ignored if present.
  5. Review the configuration, then start the channel. Use the MediaLive console’s start action and monitor the channel state and alerts through your operational process. MediaLive supports start and stop actions; the AWS setup guidance does not prescribe a specific production monitoring runbook.

Set permissions and protect node access

Separate configuration permissions from runtime permissions where that fits your team’s operating model. AWS’s MediaLive Anywhere permissions guidance lists MediaLive actions for managing networks, clusters, nodes and SDI sources. Creating a cluster also requires Amazon ECS actions. Operators need the MediaLive actions appropriate to their runtime responsibilities.

Secure access to each node as part of deployment, not as an afterthought. AWS states in its setup guide: “You are responsible for securing access to your node to protect the fidelity of the running channels and the published logs and metrics.”

Troubleshoot common setup failures

Symptom Likely issue What to check or do
Registration does not complete The script was run on a different node, or more than 24 hours passed after script creation. Confirm the script belongs to that node and run it on its assigned node within the 24-hour window. Check the node state for progression from Registering to Active.
A channel will not run or a placement group is overloaded The selected cluster or placement group does not suit the channel’s hardware needs or available capacity. Recheck the channel’s processing and interface requirements, group membership and peak concurrent demand; use the planned cluster and placement group.
An input cannot be used in Anywhere The input type may not be supported in Anywhere mode, or an SDI source may not be mapped to the appropriate card and port. Verify the input type against AWS’s Anywhere input guidance. For SDI, check the installed card, port and source mapping on the node.
Output does not follow the intended route The network paths, routes, gateways or default route may not match the traffic design. Review the management, input and output paths with the network engineer, including the public-internet output requirement and reserved CIDR space.
Network changes are blocked after node setup A node has already been added to a cluster associated with that network. AWS warns that the network cannot be modified in this state. Finalize network details before adding nodes; consult AWS guidance for the appropriate recovery path for an existing deployment.

Estimate costs and compare deployment choices

Do not estimate MediaLive Anywhere costs from Cloud MediaLive rates: AWS says the charges for Anywhere inputs, outputs and channels differ, and it identifies a separate Anywhere input quota category. Confirm current rates and quotas with AWS for the intended region and workload before approving the design; the setup information described here does not establish numeric rates.
