Set your Steam price by starting with what the game is worth, then use Steam’s regional conversion suggestions as benchmarks—not automatic answers. Compare the suggested prices with local purchasing power, exchange rates, comparable entertainment prices, and player expectations; review every currency entry and check minimums and discount timing before publishing.
How to set regional prices in Steamworks
- Choose a base price for the game. Consider expected playtime, replayability, multiplayer, Early Access status, comparable games, and planned promotions. Play similar titles and review player feedback to understand the value they offer. Valve cautions that pricing is not simply about undercutting competitors. Steamworks pricing documentation
- Open pricing for the game’s packages. Pricing is managed in Steamworks by the Steamworks partner, and the account making changes needs the required pricing permissions. Valve reviews initial prices and proposed adjustments. Its documentation says review usually takes one or two business days. Steamworks pricing documentation
- Compare Steam’s regional conversion methods. Review all the results rather than applying one percentage reduction to every market. Steam describes three methods: exchange-rate, purchasing-power, and multi-variable conversion. Steamworks pricing documentation Steam’s regional pricing explorer
- Inspect every currency and region group. Adjust a suggested value only when the game’s positioning and local conditions support it. Valve leaves pricing choices to developers. A missing supported-currency price can make the game unavailable to customers relying on that currency; Valve gives Japanese yen as an example. Steamworks pricing documentation
- Check minimums and promotion timing before submitting. Verify that each intended currency has a price, that prices meet current minimums, and that release and discount rules fit your launch calendar.
- Revisit prices when there is a reason. Steam’s explorer uses public data stated as of January 2026, so its recommendations are a dated reference rather than a guarantee that every market change is reflected automatically. Steam’s regional pricing explorer
How Steam’s three conversion methods differ
| Method | What it considers | Useful as | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exchange-rate conversion | A simple exchange rate at the indicated time. | A currency-conversion reference. | Does not by itself account for local purchasing power or comparable entertainment costs. |
| Purchasing-power conversion | Public data about purchasing power in a country or region. | A broad affordability benchmark. | Does not measure game-specific willingness to pay. |
| Multi-variable conversion | Local purchasing power, expected comparable entertainment costs, and exchange rate. | A broader benchmark that combines multiple factors. | Remains a recommendation; developers can research and set their own prices. |
Steam reports 37 currencies and 4 region groups in its regional pricing explorer. Those figures describe the platform’s listed coverage, not a requirement to use one fixed discount formula across all markets. Steam’s regional pricing explorer
How much cheaper should the game be in other countries?
There is no universally correct regional discount in the available Steam guidance. Start with the game’s base-price target and use the three conversion methods to see how exchange rates, purchasing power, and comparable entertainment costs produce different benchmarks. Then decide whether a market-specific adjustment is justified by the game’s value, local purchasing power, exchange rates, relevant entertainment prices, and customer expectations.
A broad purchasing-power measure is useful context, but it is not a study of what players will pay for your particular game. Likewise, a straight exchange-rate conversion does not establish local affordability. Steam says developers may determine their own price in each currency. Steamworks pricing documentation

Minimum prices, availability, and taxes
Steam’s documentation says the minimum base price must be at least equivalent to the Multi-Variable Conversion method for the $0.99 USD tier. The lowest possible transaction price is roughly equivalent to $0.49 USD at 50% off that minimum base price. These thresholds can affect lower-priced games: some proposed base or discounted prices below a currency’s threshold may make the game unavailable there or constrain discount options. Check Steam’s current minimum-price breakdown in Steamworks before choosing a very low price, because the limits can change. Steamworks pricing documentation
Steam’s pricing documentation also says displayed tax treatment follows local norms and regulations. Do not assume that the displayed price has identical tax treatment in every market. Steamworks pricing documentation

Price changes and sale timing
- Steam asks developers to wait until after 30 days from release before changing a price. Steamworks price-change guidance
- An increase in one or more currencies triggers a 30-day cooldown before you can submit discounts. Account for that cooldown when planning a sale. Steamworks discount guidance
- Reviewed prices cannot be scheduled automatically. You can choose when to publish reviewed prices, so coordinate review and publication with your plans. Valve says it usually reviews initial prices and proposed adjustments within one or two business days, but does not guarantee it will catch every input error. Check every value before submitting. Steamworks pricing documentation
A practical final check before publishing
- Confirm that the base price reflects the game’s content, replayability, multiplayer, Early Access status, comparable games, and promotion plans.
- Compare all three conversion methods, then assess each currency and region group on its own merits.
- Confirm that every currency you intend to support has a price; a missing entry can block purchases for customers using that currency.
- Verify current minimum-price requirements, particularly if the base price or a planned discount is near the lower end.
- Check the release-date wait and the discount cooldown before committing to a price change.
- Review each submitted value carefully: Valve’s review is not a substitute for checking your entries.
