How the two options work
Xbox Cloud Gaming on Quest
The Quest app connects to Xbox Cloud Gaming, so the game runs on Microsoft’s cloud servers and your headset receives a stream. In Xbox’s December 13, 2023 announcement, the experience is described as playing supported games on a large virtual screen, not as native immersive Quest VR gameplay. The setup calls for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, a supported controller and a high-speed internet connection.
Virtual Desktop
Virtual Desktop brings a computer desktop into VR and can stream PC VR games. In this case, the game runs on your computer, which sends the picture and input response to the Quest over your local network. The Virtual Desktop product and requirements page distinguishes ordinary desktop use from PC VR streaming: PC VR requires a VR-ready Windows PC.

Which should you choose?
Choose Xbox Cloud Gaming for cloud Xbox play
This is the more direct option if your goal is to play supported Xbox games on a virtual screen and you have the required service access, controller and internet connection. You do not need to set up a VR-ready gaming PC for the cloud-play arrangement described by Xbox.

Choose Virtual Desktop for your PC
Choose Virtual Desktop if you want to view your computer desktop in the headset or stream PC VR games from a computer you already own. For PC VR, the vendor specifies a VR-ready Windows PC and gives a GTX 970 as a baseline example; that is a vendor-stated requirement example, not a guarantee that every current game will run well.
Setup and device compatibility
Xbox Cloud Gaming
Xbox’s Quest setup announcement instructs users to download the Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) app from the Meta Quest Store and follow its tutorial to pair a supported controller. Xbox’s 2025 getting-started guide lists Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3 and Quest 3S among supported devices. The service’s subscription benefits, supported games, territories and device support can change, so check the current Xbox listing for availability and requirements.

Virtual Desktop
The Virtual Desktop requirements page lists Quest 1, Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest 3S and Quest Pro for its standalone Quest app. It lists Windows 10 or 11 64-bit and macOS Catalina or later for desktop use. For the best streaming experience, its network guidance calls for the computer to be connected by Ethernet to a 5 GHz 802.11ac or 802.11ax router; PC VR streaming additionally requires a VR-ready Windows PC. The Xbox and Virtual Desktop device lists were published at different times, so verify current product listings before relying on compatibility.
What affects performance?
Xbox Cloud Gaming depends on the internet connection between your Quest and the cloud service. Virtual Desktop depends on both the computer’s ability to run the game and the local wireless link between the computer, router and headset. Virtual Desktop specifically recommends a wired connection from the computer to the router.

The official pages cited here do not provide a controlled, like-for-like comparison of latency, image quality or reliability. Neither option can be called universally faster, sharper or more responsive on that basis; results depend on the service, hardware and network in use.
