It matters if a PC’s higher frame rate, lower latency, or adjustable settings improve the games you play enough to justify the cost and setup. If a console’s supported game modes already feel smooth to you, the difference may matter little. The useful comparison is the same game on a specific PC and console, with the same display conditions—not “PC versus console” as a blanket claim.
“Faster” can mean several different things
Frame rate is only one part of performance. Frame pacing (how evenly frames arrive), input latency, resolution, visual detail, loading, and consistency all affect how a game feels. These measures are related, but they are not interchangeable: a frame-rate figure alone cannot describe the full experience or response from a control to the screen.
PC performance depends on the machine and the game. Microsoft notes that Xbox-on-PC system requirements vary by game and that performance scales with higher-end systems (Xbox PC gaming). That is why a comparison should identify the particular game and PC configuration rather than assume every PC outperforms every console.
Compare the same game and mode
Start with a game you actually play, and compare its available modes on each platform. A performance mode and a quality mode may make different trade-offs; the platform label alone does not tell you what resolution or frame rate the game delivers. Microsoft’s Xbox certification requirements include avoiding severe problems such as unplayable frame rates, but this is a quality requirement—not a guarantee that every game holds one resolution or frame rate (Xbox console certification requirements, version 16.3).

| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Game and mode | Compare the same title, and where possible the same scene, in the modes you would use. Results vary by game and selected settings. |
| Frame rate and consistency | Look at the rate the game actually renders and whether frames arrive steadily; a display’s refresh specification does not establish either. |
| Latency and controls | Response depends on the whole input-to-display path, including the game, system, display, and input device. A nominal frame-rate advantage is not a complete latency measurement. |
| Image quality | Distinguish rendered resolution from output resolution, upscaling, detail settings, and image stability. Compare the actual mode rather than a platform’s headline output capability. |
| Display compatibility | Check supported refresh rate, VRR, ports, cable, and game support; a display feature only helps when the rest of the setup supports it. |
| Total cost and effort | Account for hardware you already own, the full system and display cost, and how much setup or troubleshooting you are willing to do. |
A faster display does not make a game render faster
A monitor or TV’s refresh rate is its display capability, not a promise about a game’s frame rate. Sony says PS5 supports 4K 120 Hz video output when used with compatible equipment and a suitable setup (PS5 4K resolution guide). The game still has to render frames at the rate you want to see.
Sony’s 27-inch gaming monitor listing advertises up to 120 Hz for compatible PS5 games and up to 240 Hz for compatible PC devices. Those are supported limits for compatible devices and games, not a guarantee that a particular title will reach either rate (Sony 27-inch gaming monitor). For PS5 4K 120 Hz output, Sony’s setup guidance covers compatible display ports and settings, and recommends the included cable or a suitable Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. A replacement cable is relevant only if the existing connection is the limiting factor.

VRR can smooth variation, but it cannot create performance
Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) synchronizes a compatible display’s refresh with the console’s graphics output; it does not make the console render additional frames. Sony says PS5 VRR requires a compatible HDMI 2.1 display and notes that results vary by TV and game (PS5 VRR support). Sony’s feature description also identifies Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) for compatible TVs; support depends on the display and setup (PS5 features).

A PC’s flexibility and potential performance are valuable only if the specific hardware, game, and display deliver improvements you notice. A console can be the better fit if its game modes already meet your needs and you prefer not to configure or troubleshoot a PC. There is no universal winner without a specific game, PC configuration, display, and cost comparison.
