Nintendo lists a native Switch 2 release dated May 14, 2026. Valheim itself is also now listed for Switch 2, with a release date of September 9, 2026, so players can choose the original as well as games that share parts of its survival loop.

Which game is closest to Valheim?
Smalland: Survive the Wilds
Choose Smalland if you want the broadest overlap in one alternative: an open world to explore, resources to scavenge, gear and structures to craft, survival threats to manage, and creatures to tame. Nintendo lists online play for up to 10 players, matching the player-count range stated on Valheim’s Switch 2 listing. The similarity is in the activity loop, not the setting: Smalland makes the wilderness feel enormous by shrinking the adventurer.

It is the most straightforward recommendation for a group that wants to explore and build together on Switch 2. The up-to-10-player figure is Nintendo’s listing, not a claim about cross-platform play or a performance test. Nintendo’s Smalland listing
Valheim on Switch 2
If the goal is specifically Valheim’s mix of procedural biomes, resource gathering, sailing, boss progression, equipment crafting, base construction, cooking and survival systems, there is no need to settle for an approximation: Nintendo lists Valheim as released for Switch 2 on September 9, 2026. Its listing describes online play for one to 10 players. Nintendo Valheim listing Nintendo Valheim product page

Choose by the part of Valheim you enjoy most
For solo exploration and environmental danger: Subnautica
Subnautica is a better fit if the appeal is venturing into an unfamiliar world while managing environmental risks, especially oxygen and resources. Its alien-ocean setting changes the rhythm substantially, and Nintendo Life describes the Switch version as single-player. It is not a co-op substitute for Valheim’s shared expeditions or a close match for its boss-and-base progression. Nintendo Life survival guide
For pressure and improvisation: Don’t Starve
Don’t Starve puts survival and crafting under pressure, with an eerie tone rather than Valheim’s Viking-inspired journey. Its challenge and atmosphere are the draw; do not expect the same 3D exploration, combat progression or building scale. Nintendo Life reports that multiplayer was added to the Switch version in 2022, but that is a Switch-version detail, not evidence of a native Switch 2 edition. Nintendo Life survival guide

- Includes: School Bus Adventures DLC and digital soundtrack
- Build: your own home on wheels and live sustainably off-grid
- Source Energy: power your electric camper van with energy from the sun, wind, or water.
- Craft: workstations and tools from resources provided by Mother Nature.
- Grow: create gardens to nurture delicate and delicious plants and mushrooms
For a harsh, solitary wilderness: The Long Dark
The Long Dark emphasizes exploration and survival in a frozen wilderness. It suits players who want the survival challenge more than co-op construction: Nintendo Life reports no multiplayer for the Switch edition. Nintendo Life survival guide
For grounded jungle survival: Green Hell
Green Hell shifts the focus to a harsh jungle, bodily needs and a story. That makes it a strong option for players seeking demanding survival management, but less suitable if Valheim’s group building and combat progression are the priority. Nintendo Life says the Switch edition has no multiplayer. Nintendo Life survival guide

- Capture and Tame Dinosaurs: Discover over 100 different dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures on the island, finding ways to tame them into useful additions for your tribe's dyno herd
- Survive Above All: Hunger, thirst, basic safety, and protecting yourself from the weather are all part of the game
- Harvest, Hunt and Build: Cut down trees and turn them into a basic home, which you can quickly expand into a Jurassic estate. Hunt for meat, scavenge for plants (or start your own garden!)
- Customize Everything: An extensive crafting system invites you to mix and match materials scavenged from the island, while also modifying the colors, textures, shapes, and styles
- Explore the Island: Solve the mystery of The ARK as you explore this massive island, discovering Explorer's Notebooks (filled with clues!) throughout
For sailing and a defined adventure: Windbound
Windbound combines exploration and resource gathering with improving a boat across a five-chapter adventure. It offers a different kind of survival journey, not Valheim’s open-ended shared settlement loop; Nintendo Life reports no multiplayer for the Switch version. Nintendo Life survival guide
For building freedom: Minecraft
Minecraft is worth considering if gathering, crafting and making things in a sandbox matter more than Valheim’s specific progression structure. It is not a close match for the Norse setting or boss-driven advancement, but offers the broad creative appeal of a world built around gathering and construction. - Cronos: The New Dawn is a brutal third-person survival horror where you fight for the future by salvaging the past. Burn monsters before they merge. Extract souls from the living. Adapt or die.
- Set in a grim world where Eastern European brutalism meets retro-futurist technology, Cronos: The New Dawn lets you experience a gripping story that straddles the line between past and future.
- The enemies you’ll encounter are nightmarish creatures, born from the remnants of humanity – defeating them will require you to make full use of your arsenal.
- The creatures you kill won’t stay dead for long. Fallen enemies can be absorbed by others - through a grotesque process called Merging - to become faster, tougher, and far deadlier.
- This physical edition of Cronos: The New Dawn includes bonus in-game content (delivered via an online update) and a set of collectible stickers. This edition also includes a Nintendo Switch 2 Game-Key Card.
Check Switch 2 compatibility before choosing an older Switch game
A listing for a Nintendo Switch game does not by itself establish that the title runs fully on Switch 2. Nintendo says Switch 2 can play Switch games, but some may not be supported or fully compatible, and advises checking individual third-party titles with their publishers. Smalland and Valheim have Nintendo-listed Switch 2 releases; Subnautica, Don’t Starve: Nintendo Switch Edition, The Long Dark, Green Hell, Windbound and Minecraft are presented here as older Switch editions or listings, so verify the particular game’s status before relying on compatibility. Nintendo Switch 2 compatibility guidance
Other Switch survival games to consider
Nintendo Life’s survival guide also includes The Flame in the Flood, This War of Mine and Sheltered, but they move farther from Valheim’s combination of open-world crafting and co-op. The guide frames The Long Dark around winter wilderness survival, This War of Mine around civilian survival under siege, and Sheltered as resource-management simulation. They may suit a different survival-game mood, but are not the closest matches for Valheim’s loop. Nintendo Life survival guide
