For improving your own League of Legends play, coaching is the better choice. A boost can change the rank shown on your account, but someone else plays the games. Coaching keeps you in control of your account and can focus on decisions you can use in future matches. That distinction is practical reasoning, not the result of a controlled study: Riot’s published materials do not show that coaching guarantees improvement or a higher rank.
What is the difference between boosting and coaching?
| What you are comparing | Rank boosting | Coaching |
|---|---|---|
| Who plays ranked? | Another player logs in to your account and plays ranked to raise its MMR, as Riot defines boosting. | You play on your own account while receiving feedback, explanation, or game review. |
| What changes directly? | The account’s rank or MMR may change; that result reflects games played by someone else. | You receive guidance about your own gameplay that you can apply in later games. |
| What can you take into your next match? | A displayed rank is not evidence that you can reproduce the other player’s performance. | Review and instruction can help you identify decisions to practice, though improvement is not guaranteed. |
| Policy and account risk | Account sharing and rank manipulation violate Riot policies and can lead to penalties. | Instruction does not require another person to play ranked on your account. Riot’s cited policies do not endorse any particular coaching service. |
Why coaching is the better fit for improving
Improvement means becoming better at playing, not simply changing the rank displayed on an account. A coach can review your games, explain a decision, and help you focus practice on your own choices. Because you remain the player, you can test that feedback in your matches.
A boost works differently: someone else plays ranked on your account. Even if the account’s rank rises, that alone does not show that you have learned the skills needed to perform at that level. This is a difference in what each option does, not evidence of a measured improvement rate for either one.
Why rank boosting carries policy risk
Riot defines boosting as a more skilled player logging into another person’s account to play ranked and inflate its MMR. Riot says account sharing and selling violate its Terms of Service and can result in bans. Its Account Penalties and Enforcement FAQ says account-sharing punishments began September 9, 2025, with Patch 25.18, and penalty linking began November 19, 2025, with Patch 25.23.

What Riot says about detection
Riot’s Anti-Boost article describes a system intended to detect cases in which a higher-rated player logs into an account and earns a significant amount of its ranked points by playing beyond the account owner’s usual skill level. Riot says the system launched privately on League of Legends in September 2025. That is Riot’s description of the system, not a promise that every violation will be detected.

How to choose a League coach
If you choose coaching, compare what the session actually provides rather than relying on a rank claim or a general promise of improvement. These are practical evaluation criteria, not findings from a controlled comparison.
- Game-specific review: Does the coach review your own games and identify concrete decisions to work on?
- Session format: Is instruction live, based on replays, or a combination? Choose a format that gives you useful feedback on your play.
- Relevant knowledge: Can you assess the coach’s League and role knowledge from clear examples or explanations?
- Scope and follow-up: What is included in the session, and will you receive actionable notes or a practice focus afterward?
- Cost: Check the price and session length before booking; no particular provider or price is established here.
Does coaching guarantee a rank climb?
No. Riot’s cited policy and enforcement sources do not establish that coaching produces a particular improvement rate, nor do they guarantee that a student will climb. Coaching is the more defensible option for developing your own play because you remain the player and can apply the feedback; the result still depends on your practice and performance.
