If sports betting is affecting your money, mood, relationships, work, or daily life, pause betting and get support now—you do not need a diagnosis or to hit a particular threshold first. Start by putting distance between yourself and the next bet, protecting money needed for essentials, and telling someone you trust. If you may harm yourself or cannot stay safe, contact emergency or urgent mental health support where you are.
What signs suggest sports betting is causing harm?
Warning signs can be financial, emotional, or behavioral. They do not prove a diagnosis, but they are reasons to take the impact seriously and seek help. The NHS gambling self-assessment asks about betting more than you can afford, needing larger bets for the same feeling, chasing losses, borrowing or selling possessions to gamble, feeling stressed or guilty, and gambling-related financial problems.
The NHS assessment assigns a score: 8 or higher suggests gambling-related harms are likely, while a score of 1–7 may still indicate a negative impact. It is a screening aid, not a diagnosis, and you do not need to complete it before asking for help. GamCare’s warning signs also include thinking about betting a lot, withdrawing from social or work situations, using gambling to escape, hiding time or spending, missing money, mood changes, sleep problems, and anxiety.
What should you do right now if you feel out of control?
- Stop the session. Step away from the app, website, or betting shop. Do not try to win back what you have lost; chasing losses can deepen the harm.
- Put barriers between you and another bet. Sign out, remove betting apps, and consider blocking software, self-exclusion, or asking your bank whether it offers a gambling transaction block. These are practical barriers, not a complete treatment plan.
- Ask someone you trust for practical help. You might ask them to sit with you while you block access or help protect money set aside for bills. Choose support that feels safe and useful to you.
- Contact gambling support. In the UK, the NHS lists the National Gambling Helpline, run by GamCare, at 0808 8020 133, free and available 24/7. GamCare describes its support as free and confidential. You can contact support without first deciding whether you have an addiction.
How can you block access to betting?
Different barriers cover different routes into gambling. In Great Britain, the Gambling Commission describes self-exclusion as a formal agreement and notes that multi-operator schemes are available. Its self-exclusion guidance includes GAMSTOP for online operators. Check each scheme’s current eligibility, coverage, and terms before enrolling; a restriction through one operator or channel may not cover every way of betting.

| Barrier | What it can restrict | Coverage and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Self-exclusion with an operator | Betting with the operator you exclude from | One operator; check the operator’s current terms and duration. |
| Multi-operator self-exclusion, such as GAMSTOP | Online gambling with participating operators | Multi-operator coverage; check current scheme coverage and terms. The Gambling Commission source describes GAMSTOP for online operators. |
| Venue self-exclusion | Access to the venue or venues covered by the agreement | Coverage depends on the venue or scheme; ask what locations and duration are included. |
| Bank gambling transaction block | Card payments identified as gambling transactions | Availability and operation depend on your bank; ask the bank directly. |
| Blocking software | Access to betting sites or apps on devices where the software is installed | Coverage depends on the software and devices. It may not block every route to gambling. |
Self-exclusion and blocking tools create friction; they cannot guarantee that every form of gambling is inaccessible. The UK Gambling Commission describes self-exclusion as “a tool used by those who have recognised that their gambling is harmful to them.”
How do you protect bills and deal with debt?
List the essential bills due next—such as housing, utilities, food, and transport—and focus on keeping those covered before making discretionary payments. If it would help, arrange payments for payday and ask a trusted person to help you follow the plan. Do not treat another bet as a way to recover money: GamCare says, “Gambling should never be viewed as a way to make money or overcome financial difficulties.”

If you owe money, do not ignore it. The NHS advises dealing with debts and points people to National Debtline. GamCare’s Money Guidance Service provides one-to-one guidance in England, Wales, and Scotland, and can refer people who need specialist debt advice. Its money guidance page explains the service and managing money when gambling is causing harm.
Where can you get treatment or support?
In the UK, call the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133; the NHS lists it as free and available 24/7. GamCare also offers information and support through its FAQs for people experiencing harm. The NHS says, “There is support and treatment available if you need it.” Its page describes gambling treatment clinics in England; service availability differs across the UK, so check what is available where you live. GamCare’s money guidance coverage is England, Wales, and Scotland.

What if gambling is affecting your mental health urgently?
If you are at immediate risk of harming yourself, or cannot keep yourself safe, contact your local emergency service or urgent mental health service now. The gambling helpline can support gambling-related concerns, but it is not a substitute for emergency care. The NHS directs people whose gambling is seriously affecting their mental health to urgent mental health help; NICE guidance also addresses responding to gambling-related harms and mental health needs: NICE recommendations.

What support can you use between appointments?
GamCare’s recovery toolkit offers self-help resources. Use these alongside appropriate professional or peer support if you need it; a toolkit does not replace urgent care when safety is at risk.
