Confirm that it permits your type of bet, that the sportsbook’s exact brand or legal operator appears on its current approved list, and that you meet its location, age, and other eligibility rules. An app-store listing or ability to create an account does not establish that you may legally bet.
Check the rules where you will place the wager
For an online or mobile bet, begin with the state where you will physically be when you place it—not only the state where you live. States can treat mobile, retail, tribal, or otherwise limited wagering differently, so permission for one format does not prove that another is allowed.
North Carolina illustrates why location and residence are separate questions: its official FAQ says a bettor need not be a resident, but must be physically in North Carolina to wager. The state says licensed operators geolocate a device before accepting a bet. Those are North Carolina rules, not a nationwide rule; check the regulator in the state where you are located.
Use the state regulator’s current rules and operator list
Find the official gaming, lottery, or sports wagering regulator through the state government’s website. Look for its sports wagering rules or FAQ, approved-operator or licensee list, and any license-verification resources. A third-party directory can help you find the regulator, but it is not the authority for whether a wager or operator is legal.

Then check the operator against the regulator’s current record. Match the public sportsbook brand to the legal company or entity named in the register; a similarly named affiliate, vendor, or service provider is not necessarily the licensed sportsbook operator.
- North Carolina’s official FAQ says online wagering with an operator not licensed by the state is illegal.
- North Carolina’s approved-licensees page pairs operator entities with public brands and license numbers.
- The Indiana Gaming Commission’s verification resources link to active sports wagering certificate holders, service providers, vendors, and registrants. The Commission also describes routes for disciplinary information and certain license-history checks using an entity’s full legal name.
- Tennessee’s Sports Wagering Council lists approved licensees and registrants, along with initial and renewal dates. It says an operator not on its list is illegal there and advises bettors to check the site before placing a bet.
The Council states: “The only way to ensure that you are betting with a licensed operator is to check this website before placing a bet.”

Confirm the format, location, age, and other limits
Once you have found the official rules and license list, check that they cover the kind of wager you want to make. Look for whether online/mobile betting, retail betting, or both are permitted, and whether the rules limit where you can bet, which events are eligible, or who may participate.
Read the location and age requirements in the same state source. North Carolina sets a minimum age of 21 for sports betting and requires operators to verify a bettor’s location by geolocating the device. Do not apply that age threshold—or its visitor rule—to another state.

A quick verification checklist
- Identify your location: For a mobile wager, use the state where you will physically be at bet placement.
- Find the official regulator: Use a state-government sports wagering page, FAQ, rules, or license-verification resource.
- Check the format and boundaries: Confirm that the state permits your type of wager and review any location, event, or eligibility limits.
- Match the operator: Find the actual sportsbook brand and its legal operating entity on the current approved list.
- Check age and location rules: Follow the state’s current requirements rather than assuming your home state’s rules apply.
- Recheck before betting: License status and registers can change. If the operator or its status is unclear, pause and ask the state regulator.
What a map, app, or signup page can—and cannot—tell you
A sportsbook app being available to download, or allowing you to register, is not proof that the state authorizes you to place a wager. Nor is an operator’s marketing page a substitute for the regulator’s current license record. A third-party directory, such as One Analytics’ state directory, can be a navigation aid, but use the relevant regulator’s rules and register for the legal check.
There is no single nationwide format-by-format answer established here, and the examples above do not establish current rules or operator lists for every state or the District of Columbia. Verify the specific jurisdiction and operator directly rather than relying on a general map or a list that may have changed.
