Prevent most training blisters by reducing repeated rubbing: use well-fitting shoes and moisture-wicking socks, keep feet dry, and stop to address a painful or red hot spot before it worsens. If a blister forms, leave the skin intact when possible, cover it, and avoid the activity or equipment that caused it until it heals. Large, very painful, worsening, or possibly infected blisters need medical advice.
Why long sessions cause blisters
A blister usually forms when repeated friction and shear damage the skin. Bone movement, friction force, and repeated shear events combine to create the injury; moisture, pressure, and poor fit can make a foot more vulnerable. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) says prevention includes properly fitting shoes and dry skin, noting that moist skin is more vulnerable (IFRC International First Aid, Resuscitation and Education Guidelines 2025).
There is no reliable blister-incidence figure for long-distance triathlons in the sources cited here. For context only, IFRC reports that 4,000 to 5,000 participants at previous Nijmegen Four Days Marches required at least one blister treatment—10% of walkers. That multi-day walking statistic is not an estimate for triathletes.
How to reduce blister risk in training
Start with fit and familiar equipment
- Choose shoes that fit properly—not too tight or too loose—and wear new shoes gradually. Apply the same check separately to cycling and running footwear.
- Use moisture-wicking sports socks; change out of sweaty socks when the session allows. Check that socks sit smoothly without creases or foreign material rubbing against the skin.
- Train in the socks, shoes, and protective products you expect to use for long sessions. Avoid debuting a new shoe, tape, lubricant, powder, or dressing on race day.
These steps follow general blister-prevention guidance from the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), NHS, and IFRC. Applying them to the swim-to-bike and bike-to-run portions of brick workouts is practical training advice, not a trial-proven transition protocol. If the session permits, carrying spare dry socks can make it easier to manage damp feet.

Check hot spots early
Pay attention to redness, discomfort, or a hot spot rather than waiting for a painful blister. Check your feet during or after long sessions, including after transitions in brick workouts. If a spot is rubbing, adjust the shoe or sock, reduce pressure, and stop or change the activity if pain or redness persists. AAD specifically advises stopping when pain, discomfort, or redness appears.
Consider friction-reducing options cautiously
AAD suggests soft bandages over problem areas and says powder or petroleum jelly may reduce friction. These are options to test in training, not guaranteed solutions: IFRC describes the prevention evidence as limited. Taping findings are mixed and very uncertain, and the guideline notes that published studies have not established that pre-taping prevents blisters. No head-to-head product ranking or triathlon-specific winning protocol is established by the cited sources.

What to do if a blister develops
If it is intact
Leave an intact blister unpopped when possible and cover it loosely with a soft or padded dressing. For a blister on the sole or another pressure area, a donut-shaped pad can cushion the skin around it rather than pressing directly on the blister. Stop the activity and avoid the shoes or equipment that caused it until it heals, as advised by AAD and NHS.
Healing time varies: NHS says blisters often heal within a week, while AAD says most heal on their own in one to two weeks. Do not treat either range as a deadline to resume training; wait until the blister has healed.

If it has opened
- Wash your hands before touching the area.
- Gently clean the blister with soap and water and allow fluid to drain.
- Do not peel off the remaining skin. AAD recommends applying petroleum jelly after drainage.
- Cover the area with a clean dressing and monitor it for worsening pain, swelling, redness, or pus.
Routine self-drainage is not advised. AAD says a large, very painful blister may need careful drainage with a sterilized needle; NHS describes drainage by a clinician for a large or painful blister, and IFRC distinguishes small blisters from large ones in its first-aid guidance. Because recommendations differ and location or complications matter, seek a clinician’s advice for a large, very painful, or complicated blister rather than trying to drain it during training or a race.
Choosing a dressing
A hydrocolloid blister dressing may protect the area and relieve discomfort. NHS says such dressings can also speed healing, but IFRC cautions that repeated removal can damage skin, bacteria may collect beneath a dressing during prolonged walking, and trials are needed to establish treatment efficacy. Treat a hydrocolloid dressing as a possible protective covering, not a proven way to heal faster or keep racing.

When to seek medical advice
Stop the aggravating activity and seek prompt medical advice if the blister is getting worse or you notice possible infection signs, such as increasing redness, heat, swelling, pus, or increasing pain. NHS also advises seeking help for very painful or recurring blisters, blisters in unusual locations, unexplained clusters, or blisters caused by burns, sunburn, or an allergic reaction. A dressing cannot replace medical assessment, and a photograph alone cannot establish whether a blister is infected.
