You can free up PC storage without uninstalling games by reviewing Windows cleanup suggestions, managing temporary files, and moving personal files to another drive. Xbox storage options depend on the console model; check current Xbox Support guidance for your exact console before moving games or buying a drive.
Free up space on a Windows PC without removing games
1. Check what is using the space
In File Explorer, select This PC to see how much space is available on each drive. For a breakdown by category, open Settings > System > Storage. Windows lists usage such as installed apps, temporary files, and system-reserved storage, and can show connected drives. See Microsoft’s Storage settings in Windows.
2. Review cleanup recommendations
Go to Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations. Review the items Windows identifies, such as temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps. Windows shows the expected space savings; select only items you recognize and intend to remove. This review can help you avoid deleting something you want to keep. Be especially careful with Previous Windows installation(s). Removing these files deletes the Windows.old rollback files and may remove your option to return to the previous Windows version.

3. Set up Storage Sense with its defaults in mind
Storage Sense can automatically clear temporary files and Recycle Bin contents. By default, it does not clean the Downloads folder or cloud content unless you configure those options. It manages the system drive; other drives have separate storage controls. Files marked Always keep on this device are exempt from cloud-file management. Review the settings under Settings > System > Storage before enabling or changing automatic cleanup. Details are in Microsoft’s Manage drive space with Storage Sense.
4. Move personal files you want to keep
Sort folders such as Videos, Music, Pictures, and Downloads by size, then move large files you want to keep to an external drive or other storage. Once moved, those files no longer use space on the PC’s internal drive, but you need the external drive connected to access them. Windows also lets you choose where new content is saved in advanced storage settings. Microsoft’s Windows storage guide describes moving files and changing save locations.

For files in OneDrive, Files On-Demand can keep content online-only to reduce local storage use. You need the cloud copy and network access to retrieve an online-only file. Making a file online-only is not the same as backing up a file that exists only on your PC.

Before changing Xbox storage, identify your console model and consult current Xbox Support instructions for that model. Microsoft’s Manage storage page is an official support result, but its available page content does not establish the precise menu steps, drive requirements, or which games can launch from an external drive.

Do not assume that a drive that can store game files can also run every game directly. Storage capacity and game-launch compatibility are different requirements, and the answer can depend on the console generation and drive. Check current manufacturer guidance before buying a drive or moving games. For PC personal files, an external drive can be useful; that does not by itself establish Xbox game compatibility.
