If your phone gets too hot during Pokémon GO, stop playing and unplug it if it’s charging. Move it out of direct sunlight to a cooler, ventilated place and let it cool before using it again. To reduce battery use during a session, lower screen brightness, avoid hot conditions, and try Pokémon GO’s in-game Battery Saver. These steps can help, but no single setting guarantees a fix: drain and heat vary with the phone, battery health, brightness, GPS, signal, network, weather, and charging.
What to do first if your phone is hot
- Stop playing and disconnect the charger. Avoid charging a phone that is already too hot.
- Move it out of sun and heat. Put it somewhere cooler and ventilated, not in an enclosed or poorly ventilated space.
- Let it cool before resuming. Do not put the phone in a refrigerator or use an unsupported cooling trick.
If an iPhone or iPad displays a temperature warning, Apple’s guidance is to turn the device off, move it to a cooler environment away from direct sunlight, and allow it to cool. Apple lists 0°C to 35°C (32°F to 95°F) as the ambient operating range for iPhone and iPad; that is not a Pokémon GO limit and does not establish the operating range for other phones. Apple Support also warns: “Using an iOS or iPadOS device in very hot conditions can permanently shorten battery life.” See Apple’s temperature guidance.
Reduce screen and game workload
Lower brightness and avoid direct sun
A bright display can use more power, and playing in direct sunlight or hot surroundings can add to the phone’s thermal load. Lower brightness to a comfortable level and, where practical, play in shade. For Pixel phones, Google also recommends avoiding enclosed spaces and using Wi-Fi instead of mobile data where possible to help manage heat; this is device-specific guidance, not a guaranteed fix for every Android phone. Use Pokémon GO’s Battery Saver
Pokémon GO has an in-game Battery Saver setting. Niantic says it turns the display off when you point the device downward; the game continues tracking distance as though the display were on, and vibration can still notify you about nearby Pokémon if vibration is enabled. This can reduce the need to keep the screen lit while walking, but it does not mean every phone will use less battery by a predictable amount. See Niantic’s Battery Saver instructions.

Distinguish the game setting from your phone’s power-saving mode
The game’s Battery Saver is separate from the operating system’s battery-saving mode. Niantic warns that device-level battery-saving modes can affect Adventure Sync distance tracking. If distance is not updating as expected, check your phone’s power-saving settings and Niantic’s Adventure Sync troubleshooting guidance.
Avoid extra load when the phone is warming up
Graphics-intensive play, prolonged GPS use, hot conditions, direct sun, and resource-intensive activity while charging can contribute to warmth. If the phone is heating up, avoid charging during play and close or pause other demanding tasks where practical. Google specifically identifies gaming and resource-intensive use while charging as situations that can warm a Pixel phone; this does not prove the same behavior or remedy for every device.

How to tell whether the issue is the game or the phone
Battery use during Pokémon GO is not established by a controlled universal drain rate. If the phone is also overheating, shutting down, or showing thermal warnings when you are not playing, contact the phone manufacturer’s support rather than assuming the game has revealed a battery defect. Google advises contacting Pixel support if a Pixel continues turning off.
Check that Pokémon GO is up to date. Niantic’s Android troubleshooting guidance also lists refreshing game data, clearing the cache, and reinstalling the app for general problems. Niantic publishes minimum supported platform requirements, but meeting them does not guarantee that the game will work on every device model or configuration. Check Niantic’s supported-device information if the game is persistently unstable.

A compatible portable power bank can extend an outdoor session if the phone is cool and running out of charge is the main problem. Choose one that matches the phone’s connector, has capacity suited to how long you will be away from an outlet, and is practical to carry. A power bank adds battery capacity; it does not fix overheating. Do not charge a hot phone, or leave a charging phone in direct sun or an enclosed space.

There is no official figure in the cited guidance for Pokémon GO battery use per hour or for how much any one setting saves. Treat Battery Saver, reduced brightness, shade, and network choices as practical adjustments rather than guaranteed battery-life percentages.
