QSSR vs. AMD FSR: Compatibility, Image Quality, and Performance

QSSR is Sony’s AI upscaling option for standard PS5 games; AMD FSR is a separate family with generation-specific support. Neither has a proven universal edge over the other.

QSSR and AMD FSR are separate upscaling technologies, not two interchangeable settings. QSSR is Sony’s AI upscaling option for standard PlayStation 5 games; AMD FSR is a multi-generation family of game-rendering technologies with different upscaling and frame-generation features. The available evidence does not establish a universal image-quality winner or a matched frame-rate advantage for either one.

What QSSR and AMD FSR are

Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) is Sony’s AI upscaling library for standard PS5 games. Sony announced it on October 1, 2026, describing it as a quick evolution of PSSR, the higher-end upscaling feature associated with PS5 Pro. QSSR grew out of Project Amethyst, Sony’s graphics AI collaboration with AMD, but that collaboration does not make QSSR another name for AMD FSR. Sony’s announcement describes QSSR as a performance-oriented option for standard PS5.

Sony says QSSR uses a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation intended to maximize performance on PS5. AMD FSR, by contrast, is an evolving family of technologies. Its features and compatibility depend on the FSR generation and the specific feature a game implements; “FSR support” does not refer to one universal hardware requirement. AMD’s FSR overview and FSR Upscaling documentation describe the distinct generations and implementations.

Where each technology is available

Comparison QSSR AMD FSR
Platform Standard PlayStation 5 games Games integrating a particular FSR feature; some specified compatible PC games also expose AMD features through AMD Software
Where enabled As an optional graphics setting in supported games, according to Sony Typically through a game’s graphics settings when the developer integrates it; availability and hardware requirements vary by generation and feature
Named initial games Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei Varies by game and FSR implementation; AMD’s compatibility documentation lists features and supported products
Quality evidence Sony says QSSR improves detail and image stability; no matched comparison with FSR is established AMD says its ML-based FSR Upscaling improves detail and temporal stability and reduces ghosting compared with FSR 3.1; this is not a QSSR comparison
Comparative performance evidence No QSSR-versus-FSR benchmark or established QSSR frame-rate uplift in the cited sources AMD publishes performance figures for particular FSR, game, and hardware combinations, but they do not compare FSR with QSSR

Sony names Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first QSSR games and says their updates add QSSR as an optional graphics setting. Support is per game: check the current game version and console rather than assuming every PS5 title includes it. Sony’s announcement gives the initial title list.

FSR support requires a more specific check. AMD’s current compatibility material separates FSR 1, FSR 2, FSR 3, and the Redstone suite. AMD GPUOpen lists FSR Upscaling 4.1.1, released in June 2026, for RX 7000 and RX 9000 discrete GPUs. It also lists FSR 2.3.4 and FSR 3.1.5 analytical fallback for RX 500-series and equivalent GPUs, subject to the documented shader-model and API requirements. These are implementation-specific compatibility details, not a blanket rule that all FSR features work on all Radeon hardware. Consult AMD GPUOpen’s FSR Upscaling documentation for the relevant feature and requirements.

Which looks better?

There is no evidence here for a universal QSSR-versus-FSR image-quality winner. Sony says QSSR improves image detail and stability on standard PS5. AMD says its ML-based FSR Upscaling improves detail and temporal stability and reduces ghosting compared with FSR 3.1. Those claims concern different systems and configurations; they are not a controlled comparison between QSSR and FSR.

For Marvel’s Wolverine, Sony’s French PlayStation Blog reproduces a statement from developer Insomniac Games saying QSSR adds pixel-level sharpness and stability to environments, revealing more detail in locations such as Madripoor and Shinjuku. This is the substance of the original French statement; it is a developer description, not an independent side-by-side test. The French PlayStation Blog post contains the original wording.

TechRadar reports that Digital Foundry tried QSSR in both initial games and described its potential as remarkable. That is a qualitative expert assessment reported secondhand by TechRadar, not a quantified result or a matched test against AMD FSR. TechRadar’s report provides that account.

Does QSSR increase FPS, and which is faster?

The cited sources do not establish that QSSR itself increases frame rate, and they provide no QSSR-versus-FSR frame-time comparison. Upscaling can help a game target performance by reconstructing a higher output resolution from a lower internal render resolution, but the result depends on the game’s implementation, settings, and hardware. AMD markets FSR as a performance-boosting family, but figures for particular AMD products, games, or FSR modes cannot be treated as evidence of QSSR’s performance.

A fair performance comparison would need to hold the game, hardware, output resolution, internal resolution, and settings constant. Without that matched setup and published measurements, there is no defensible percentage or frame-rate figure to give for QSSR versus FSR.

Can you use QSSR and FSR on the same system?

Usually, “QSSR versus FSR” is a comparison of platform availability and technology, not a choice between two toggles in one game. QSSR is a PS5 game option. FSR is integrated into games by developers and is also exposed through AMD Software in specified compatible PC titles. A current PS5 owner does not need to buy another console to use QSSR when a supported game offers the setting; an AMD Radeon graphics card does not enable QSSR.

Do not confuse AMD Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) with FSR or QSSR. RSR is AMD’s driver-level upscaler for supported Radeon hardware. AMD says to prefer a game’s native FSR option where available, and advises against running RSR and FSR together because double upscaling can reduce image quality. AMD’s RSR guidance explains the distinction and its recommendation.
