GOG’s Preservation Program is a company-run effort to maintain selected classic games for modern and future PC systems. It adds compatibility work, quality testing and, often, custom improvements to specific GOG editions; it does not promise that every old PC game will work on every computer or remain on sale forever. Check the live program catalog for current membership and each game’s listing for its requirements and features.
What is the GOG Preservation Program?
GOG announced the program in November 2024 as an official mark for classic games it works to keep playable. GOG said it would commit its own resources to compatibility with modern and future systems, using extensive quality testing and, often, custom improvements. It launched with 100 games—a launch-time figure, not a current catalog count—and GOG described those titles as 20% of its catalog of classic games at the time. Both numbers are company-reported figures from the announcement, not independent measurements or present-day totals. (GOG’s November 2024 announcement.)
This is active maintenance, not simply a label for old files. CD PROJEKT’s 2024 management report says GOG was developing internal tools for modern operating systems, display resolutions, controllers and features such as cloud saves. It also says GOG restored several cult releases that had been unavailable for years, naming Alpha Protocol and Resident Evil. Those examples describe restoration work; they do not establish that every restored game is currently in the program or available for sale. (CD PROJEKT’s 2024 management report.)
What does program membership mean for a buyer?
GOG presents membership as a commitment to compatibility work for the listed edition, with expected operation on popular PC configurations, technical support for problems running the game, and access to offline installers. The launch announcement also says a game’s edition may include manuals, bonus content, DLC or features missing from other editions. These are program-level descriptions, not proof that every title includes every item or supports every configuration. Check the individual store page for the actual edition contents, system requirements and documented features.

Does GOG make old PC games work on Windows 11?
The program aims to make selected games work on modern systems, but the available program description does not certify every title specifically for Windows 11. Nor does broad compatibility work establish support for every resolution, controller, cloud-save feature or PC configuration. For a particular game, use its current GOG listing and support information rather than assuming a feature from the program name alone.
Which games are in the program?
Membership and sale availability can change, so the GOG Preservation Program catalog is the place to check the current list. Before choosing a game, compare the title’s listed requirements and operating systems, compatibility changes, controller and display options, cloud saves, included manuals or bonus content, DLC, and offline-installer information. Those details are title-specific; the program’s general scope does not verify them for every game.

Can I keep GOG games offline?
GOG lists access to offline installers as a benefit for program games. These installers let a buyer keep a local copy rather than relying only on downloading through a launcher. If you want that option, check the game’s current listing and account download area for its installer files and any accompanying extras. Keeping a backup is a practical way to retain a copy of files you have downloaded, but it does not guarantee that a game will remain available for purchase or that future systems will run it without compatibility work.
Can a preserved game be removed from sale?
Yes. Program inclusion is not a guarantee of permanent commercial availability. Game rights and publisher decisions can affect whether a title remains on sale. In a September 2025 interview, GOG senior PR representative Piotr Gnyp described the work behind compatibility, saying, “Our internal tech team analyzes each game,” and “builds custom wrappers or tools when needed, and thoroughly tests the result.” He also noted that working with Japanese partners can require demonstrating technical capability and cultural understanding. The interview underscores that preservation depends on technical work and rights-holder relationships; it does not guarantee that any particular title will stay listed. How does GOG preserve classic PC games?
GOG’s stated approach combines technical maintenance with title-by-title testing and improvements. Its corporate report points to internal tools for operating systems, resolutions, controllers and cloud saves, while its 2025 comments describe analyzing games and building custom wrappers or tools when needed. The available statements describe areas of work, not a uniform technical recipe or feature checklist applied to every title. For developers or publishers interested in the program, GOG’s program announcement gives its inquiry route.
