- The basic goal: Use an exploit to run the HackMii Installer, then install the Homebrew Channel. Once installed, the channel appears in the Wii Menu; you do not need to rerun the exploit each time you launch an application. .dolor.elffile on the SD card; the HackMii Installer can install the Homebrew Channel or BootMii. Do not substitute files or instructions intended for another console type or software version.
Choose an exploit that matches your Wii
WiiBrew documents System Menu versions 3.0 through 4.3, with firmware and region requirements varying by exploit. Compare the Wii’s version and region, whether you have the required game disc, and the supported SD-card type before choosing. The WiiBrew setup guide lists routes including Wilbrand, Smash Stack, Indiana Pwns, Bathaxx, Return of the Jodi, Yu-Gi-OWNED!/Yu-Gi-Vah, and Eri HaKawai. Game-specific methods are not universal; older routes such as Twilight Hack and Bannerbomb have narrower firmware limits.
If your Wii is on System Menu 4.3 and you have no game disc
WiiBrew lists Wilbrand as a game-free route for a Wii running System Menu 4.3. Confirm that the instructions and storage compatibility still match your console before proceeding. The available evidence does not establish that every other method is game-free or works across all regions.

If you are considering LetterBomb
The maintained community guide’s LetterBomb directions require System Menu 4.3 and selecting the console’s region. They call for obtaining the Wii’s MAC address, placing the matching private/ folder and boot.elf at the SD card’s root, then opening the exploit entry in the Wii Message Board. Follow the current guide for the exact file-generation and installation steps rather than relying on this overview. If the message does not appear, that guide advises checking the date, selected region, MAC address, FAT32 formatting, and SD slot. Treat these as troubleshooting checks from the guide, not a guarantee that any one issue is the cause.

Install the Homebrew Channel carefully
- Confirm the console and version. Verify that the hardware is an original Wii and note its System Menu version and region. Choose an exploit whose documented requirements fit those details.
- Prepare compatible storage. Use an SD card and computer SD-card reader. Format and organize the card as the selected exploit’s current instructions specify; do not assume a card type works with every route.
- Copy only the matching exploit files. The exploit is used to launch the installer from the SD card. For LetterBomb, the maintained guide specifies placing
private/andboot.elfat the card root; other methods have their own requirements. - Run the exploit and installer. Trigger the selected exploit using its documented procedure, then use the HackMii Installer to install the Homebrew Channel. The specific on-screen sequence depends on the installer and method; consult the current instructions for that route.
- Verify the channel from the Wii Menu. After installation, the Homebrew Channel should be available as a channel in the Wii Menu and can launch homebrew applications. Installing it is distinct from making later system-component changes.
Prepare recovery before changing system components
Installing the Homebrew Channel is the basic launcher step. Later modifications to system components are separate and can carry additional risk, so do not treat recovery tools as making them harmless. WiiBrew’s FAQ says BootMii is optional and recommends installing it; it also states, “No. Installing BootMii is completely optional.” The maintained guide recommends making a console-specific NAND backup and having Priiloader as an additional recovery/control layer before later changes such as cIOS modifications. Neither tool guarantees recovery from every mistake. Read the current guidance for your exact console before proceeding with any such change.
